6 Pop-Up Events To Make This Week Awesome

By Brooke Darling - 22 Jun 2016

Congrats team, we survived another #eastcoastlow.

Treat yourself by getting out of the house with any one of these epic events popping up on the Gold Coast this week.

Happy Hour, A Beer-Inspired T-shirt Exhibition at Balter | Thursday, June 23

There’s no need to hold out ‘til the weekend, ‘cause the awesome crew at Balter Brewing are throwing one extra spesh event this Thursday evening. In a few short months of operation, these guys have done a heart-warming job of leveraging their brand to raise funds for incredibly deserving charities. This week y’all invited to Happy Hour, where 14 artists have designed a cool t-shirt and only 10 of each design will ever be printed. Attendees have the chance to pick up one of these exclusive tees for $50. Don’t have a pineapple? Head down and sink a few beers regardless. This rad little fundraising event will no doubt be the first of many at their Currumbin-based brewery with 100 per cent of proceeds raised from beer and t-shirt sales going to Cystic Fibrosis Australia. Cheers boys!

When: 5pm—9pm, Thursday, June 23
Where: 14 Traders Way, Currumbin

End of an Era Closing Party at The Avenue | Friday and Saturday, June 24 and 25

You can’t call yourself a local unless you’ve lost a night’s or three’s memory partying at The Avenue, or at least stopped in for cheapy pre-drinks to get a night started. While it’s a sad day farewelling a glitter strip icon, the Coast’s longest-running live music venue which opened in 1984, there’s a huge party planned to give the nightspot a fitting send-off. Tease the hair, dig out your finest retro garb, and reminisce about shenanigans of days past with 70s and 80s disco tunes, giveaways, and prizes for best dressed. Fortunately, it’s not the last we’ll be seeing of The Avenue crew, with massive plans for their new $3 million venture almost complete. In the meantime, let’s drink the bar dry!

When: 7pm ‘til late, Friday and Saturday, June 24 and 25
Where: 4 Orchid Avenue, Surfers Paradise

Banana Friday, Closing Party at The Walls | Friday, June 24

Times are a-changing on the Gold Coast. And while our art scene is still in its infancy compared to our capital cousins, there is a growing number of contemporary art spaces that are totally deserving of our attention. One such space is The Walls in a semi-industrial area of Miami, and if you needed an excuse to check ‘em out, well this is as good as any. This Friday evening The Walls is throwing a Banana Friday gig to bid adieu to the current artist-in-residence and exhibition, NOISEWALL by Ali Bezer. Come listen to dark techno by Brisbane-imported DJs and join in for a boogie among the GC artsy folk.

When: 6pm—10pm, Friday, June 24
Where: 4/18 Mountain View Avenue, Miami

Retro Food Truck Picnic at Tweed Heads | Saturday, June 25

It’s true, the meals on wheels phenomenon has exploded on the GC, and this Saturday it’s the southerners’ turn, with a convoy of food trucks descending on Tweed Heads. From 9am—2pm, Jacks Evans Boat Harbour will morph into a pop-up breakfast and lunch picnic for families, together with live music, vintage market stalls, and classic cars on display. We love a food truck round-up, but by gee it makes decision-making exceptionally brain-frying. New mobile trucks seem to appearing weekly, so spread the love around, or keep your eyes peeled for these reliable faves dishing out the goods.

When: 9am to 2pm, Saturday, June 25
Where: Jack Evans Boat Harbour, Coral Street, Tweed Heads

Après Ski Party at Après Surf | Saturday, June 25

Ever spent a season livin’ it up in the northern hemisphere ski resorts? Well, chances are you’ve drunk yourself under the table at a few après ski parties. The laid-back lads at Après Surf are throwing a party, what is hoped to be the first of many, to pay homage to that which inspired them to open a bar in the first place. There’ll be German hot dogs on the barbie, snowboard movies on the projector, warm drinks to keep you toasty, and DH tunes by Leisure Guide. While finding a retro ski suit might be a little harder than in the op shops of Euro-land, we reckon some fluorescent beanies, funky leg warmers, and ugly jumpers will do, just don’t forget your drinking shoes. Day-drinking shoes, that is. The event kicks off at 2pm.

When: From 2pm ‘til late, Saturday, June 25
Where: 2376 Gold Coast Highway, Mermaid Beach

Festa Junina at Miami Marketta | Sunday, June 26

No you are not dreaming, and yes we did report on this last week. That pesky #eastcoastlow put plans on hold, postponing Festa Junina from last Sunday to THIS Sunday. Another week of anticipation just means those vivacious Brazilians are jumping out of their eternally-tanned skin to celebrate with us all. Held at Miami Marketta, all manner of fun is on the agenda with the likes of country, folk, and roots music; country bumpkin-style dress-ups; Brazilian food, desserts, and mulled wine; oh, and dancing. There’ll be a shite load of dancing! And for that, we reckon this will be one of the hottest things to do on the Gold Coast this weekend. Pre-purchase tickets are $10, or $15 at the door (free for kids under 12).

When: 2pm—10pm, Sunday, June 26
Where: Miami Marketta, 23 Hillcrest Parade, Miami
