Culture buffs, clear your diary because a truly epic—we’re talking a world exclusive—exhibition is coming to Home of the Arts (HOTA) on the Gold Coast, and you’re going to want to check it out.
Running from Saturday 18 February to Sunday 4 June, Pop Masters: Art from Mugrabi Collection, New York, will showcase never-before-seen works in Australia by iconic pop artists like Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, Katherine Bernhardt and Kwesi Botchway.
The exhibition will showcase over 50 pieces, sourced entirely from the famed private collection of one of the world’s most prominent art collectors, Jose Mugrabi. Think, the chance to see Keith Haring’s world-renowned 1981 Untitled (Dancing Dogs) piece IRL. Or Andy Warhol’s Sixteen Jackies and Cross, Basquiat’s iconic New York, New York and KAWS’ 2.8-metre tall What Party. Yep, it’s a seriously special exhibit.
Even better, the collection will be accompanied by two unmissable evenings, Up Late: New York Nights on Friday, 24 March and Friday, 19 May. As the sun gives way to the moon, you’ll get the chance to immerse yourself in the sights, sounds and vibes of New York at night with a blend of music, art and incredible pop-up performances.
These special events will take your senses on a journey around the world, to the culture-steeped streets of New York after dark, as you peek into the magical world of some of the most iconic artists in pop culture.
From 6pm to 10pm, make like Basquiat and immerse yourself in the cultural hotbed of New York during the 70s as you sip Manhattan-inspired cocktails at the Pop Up Bar, and devour Brooklyn hot dogs and pretzels as big as your head from the classic New York food cart.
As you wander amongst the thought-provoking art, your experience will be soundtracked to urban beats, disco, hip hop and new wave—all of which served as an inspiration to the artists whose work you’re witnessing.
To really transport you to the vibing streets and studios of New York, special performances will take place in HOTA’s Grand Foyer at 7:30pm, both nights.
On Friday, 24 March bless your ears and eyes with music and live performances from Tanzer, The Huxleys, Great Sage, Josh Norbido, Voiid Collective and Andrea Tenille. If the work you’ve seen has inspired you to flex your creativity, from 7pm to 9pm you can drop into the HOTA Gallery Studio to create pop-inspired earrings and badges with Hues of Happy artist, Elisha Oatley Escreet.
On Friday, 19 May, check out goosebump-inducing performances from Auntie Jonny, VICES, Ironing Maidens, The Farm and Josh Norbido. Then join Tongan-Polynesian artist, Samuel Tupou between 7pm to 9pm in the HOTA studio, to create your own Pop Art with screen printing workshops.
When the gallery closes at 10pm, your night doesn’t have to end there. Just head upstairs to The Exhibitionist Bar (open 'til late) for even more bites, art-inspired cocktails and incredible views of the glittering GC skyline.
A dreamy date night with your S.O., the ultimate catch-up with your art-loving mates or the perfect solo after-dark experience, book your tickets to Pop Masters: Art from Mugrabi Collection, New York now. Head here to snag yours.
