If there’s one thing Melbourne loves, it’s dining out. This melting pot of world flavours and edible storytelling speaks to the heart of every die-hard food fan here. Truly, we’re blessed by the culinary talent on offer, and the fact that quite a number of these are accessible and convenient to as many gourmands as possible. After all, it wouldn’t be Melbourne if we weren’t sharing a meal with everyone. 

To support the pursuit of world-class cuisine and satiating sips for all, we’ve teamed up with Toyota to highlight some of Melbourne’s best inclusive restaurants for your next visit. From family-friendly local gems to premium CBD dining, here’s your hitlist of accessible gems for the Victorian capital.

ARU

Wide automatic doors lead into a long space dominated by the open kitchen on one side. Sit along the high marble bar or booth tables to be right near the action, or seek a quieter place tucked away, with a step-free gender neutral bathroom nearby. 

Start with snacks like the famous ‘Forbidden rice’ sourdough with palm sugar glaze, or Wagyu tongue with marrow, Vietnamese sate and betel leaf, before moving to sumptuous mains like 14-day dry-aged duck, a side of the bougiest fried rice of your life with Moreton Bay Bug, finishing with a caramelised cheesecake mille feuille with jasmine milk tea and yuzu.

  • Although the wine list is excellent, you won’t want to skip the intriguing non alcs like a mandarin, yuzu vinegar and fermented Darjeeling tea soda.

Street corner with restaurant400 Gradi have been hand-stretching award-winning pizzas since 2008, earning them a devoted following of locals and putting them on Melbourne’s tourism map. While people come for the authentic Neapolitan-style woodfired pizzas, 400 Gradi offer the suite of Italian classics, from bruschetta and arancini to gnocchi and bolognese. 

The aesthetic is stylish Italian modern, but the vibe is welcoming and family-friendly. Step-free access leads to table, bar and booth seating in the main open-kitchen dining room or tables in the side room, away from the main action, plus casual footpath seating outside. The bathroom and baby change room are wheelchair accessible—with some surprisingly stylish wall decor.

  • Need a sweet treat? Head next door to their gelateria, Zero Gradi, for premium artisan Italian ice creams and delightful little desserts.

Vue De Monde

Plate of green ornate flowersEveryone deserves to access the heights of fine dining. A lift takes you to the 55th floor of the Rialto building, with breathtaking views across Greater Melbourne. Well-spaced tables line Vue de Monde’s floor-to-ceiling glass walls, surrounding an open kitchen where the city’s best put care and precision into each swirl and garnish.

The Chef’s Tasting Menu is an abundance of precise, beautifully executed courses showcasing elevated technique and an intimate appreciation for Australian produce and native ingredients. It’s surprising and ever-changing. All you have to expect is the absolute best. Pair your degustation with premium wines or opt for an exquisite curated tea pairing.

  • Vue de Monde is one of the few places that still offers a cheese course from an actual old-school cheese trolley! An extra special delight.

  • The cocktail lounge, Lui Bar, is also one of Melbourne’s finest, and all the bar snacks come out of the Vue de Monde kitchen—definitely a spot to add to your list.

Farmer’s Daughters

Salmon salad with fork in itFarmer’s Daughters is your gateway to Gippsland’s best producers. Come via the main entrance or through the cafe into a bright space of light timber and pale sage green. Sit at tables or along the bar at the street-level casual deli, or if you’d prefer something more formal, the open-kitchen restaurant accessible by stairs and lift.

The restaurant offers a la carte lunch or a sumptuous set menu dinner, both taking you on a journey into the farms and waters of Gippsland. From the homestyle soda bread with buffalo milk butter to Ramarro Farm veg, house-made ferments and Alpine trout with mountain pepper cream and trout caviar, these are dishes that not only tantalise but nourish your soul with a sense of place.

Insider Intel:

  • Squirrelled away upstairs is a rooftop greenhouse bar, a CBD oasis of greenery that’s the perfect spot for kicking back with a very savoury Dirtroad Martini (olives three ways? sold).

  • On weekdays, you can pop by the window for takeaway coffees and fresh pastries.

Poodle Bar & Bistro

Brightly coloured floor Channelling the grand dining Euro bistro, Poodle is serious about good food and drink without taking itself too seriously. After all, it’s known for patio parties as much as its heavy-hitting international wine list. Start with oysters and a martini, maybe a crisp panisse with white anchovy and onion jam, then move to a juicy Wagyu rump steak with Bordelaise sauce and a cracking French red. 

At this stage, wrapping up with anything less than a rich chocolate mousse feels like sacrilege. The bar and dining room are like slipping into an Art Deco dream of chequered floors, green marble, white tablecloths and sultry lighting. They’ve also decked out the accessible bathroom to a similar luxe degree, as a flourish.

Insider Intel:

  • Deal-lovers should keep an eye out for their ‘Wednesday with Frites’ specials, featuring a main like burgers or chicken Kyiv with, you guessed it, frites for just $30.

  • Their hip young sibling, Rocco’s Bologna Discoteca, is a few doors down if you fancy Melbourne’s most famous meatball sub.

Republica St Kilda Beach

Outdoor area with orange seatingA quintessential St Kilda experience, Republica is your go-to for beachside hangs 7 days a week. Bright and airy, with step-free access and wide paths, it’s a welcoming hub with weekly deals and live music. Sit in the dining room and gaze out at the bay, watermelon and mint margarita in hand. Head to the dog-friendly courtyard with beachy tables and umbrellas, an outdoor bar, stage, accessible toilet and even a photobooth for making memories. 

There are QR codes for easy ordering, so you can sit back and enjoy upscale beach club grub like lamb skewers with Calabrian chilli and yoghurt, fresh pizzas and blue swimmer crab risotto—but what could be better than beer-battered fish and chips by the sea? Keep the summer vibes going with a mango tart and passionfruit curd. Weekends see them open for brunch, too (with an irresistible Banoffee French Toast).

  • Coming with the whole family? The Little Flippers menu will keep them happy with kiddie serves of pizza, pasta and ice cream.

  • The promenade is right on your doorstep here, with a wide, flat path that makes for an idyllic route on sunny days.

Marmont

Six oysters on an ice plateSoak up the California vibes at Marmont, a sprawling indoor-outdoor lounge restaurant bursting with colour and life beside the river. A wide, welcoming arch leads to the enormous central bar, where they’re whipping up playful twists like the Retox with coconut water, cucumber, lemon and a spike of vodka, or the Million Dollar Margarita (a steal at only $80). 

Sit in the covered outdoor area or drink and dine at the tables and lounges inside with floor-to-ceiling windows for natural light. Share a few SoCal dishes, like Baja fish tacos, beef tartare with Korean chilli, Bay Bug rolls, the buckwheat flatbread with whipped cod roe and salsa fresca and the famous Marmont burger with fries and smoked chilli sauce. Even the all-American warm chocolate chip cookie gets a glow-up with cognac ice cream. With private blue badge parking, you’ll want to stay a while.

  • Got a taste for the finer things, but keeping to a budget? Come for Wagyu Wednesday and get a primo Wagyu steak with Cali chilli butter and chips for just $35.

  • DJs hit the decks on Fridays and Saturdays, so stop by and celebrate the weekend.

Omi 380

Matcha in an iced cupWhile they list their specialties as wagyu, matcha, sake and bekari (i.e. baked treats), Omi 380 is so much more. It’s an all-encompassing offering of Japanese cuisine: Izakaya-style sashimi and sushi selections, fun sushi ‘tacos’, skewers, dumplings, premium wagyu set meals, rich ramen and even lobster bisque udon. 

Their authentic, graded matcha permeates the menu, from specialty drinks, like the matcha coconut cold brew, to desserts like tiramisu and cheesecake and sweet ice-cream-topped toast with house-made shokupan. 

The venue stretches back from the wide, manual glass doors, past shelves of freshly baked goods to a brightly lit warren of bar seating, half-booths, tables, comfy lounges and a raised area with stairs and handrail. Luckily, it’s easy QR code ordering, and the all-gender accessible bathroom and change table are nearby.

  • Curious about sake but don’t know where to start? Omi380 offers a signature tasting set of three different sakes, introducing you to distinct styles and flavour profiles.

  • For the real matcha-lovers, indulge in the 380 High Tea Set with nine matcha-inspired morsels of Japanese-Western fusion desserts.

Reed House

Bench with plates of food on itAn instant Melbourne classic, Reed House feels like being welcomed into your friend’s home. But with better design taste and a full bar. Most of the menu changes in line with seasonal produce, but there are some icons they can probably never take off: ramen scotch egg, welsh rarebit crumpet, crispy potatoes with chicken salt and malt vinegar mayo and dark chocolate amaro-and-milo bites. 

Whether you’re snacking with a savoury house martini or making a dent in a long Sunday lunch, you can take Reed House at your pace. Step-free entrance via the outdoor courtyard leads into the hallway and main dining room with half booths against the wall and seats around the curved bar. The side dining space is a little more cosy and quiet. 

Insider Intel:

  • ‘What’s in the Duck’? The Reed House ‘duck’ jug is the restaurant mascot, always filled with an interesting featured liqueur or amaro available by the nip.

  • Wednesday is for midweek specials, and Reed House’s $30 steak and mash is seriously good value.

  • The side dining room is also known as ‘The Egg Room’, for the painting by local artist Juliet Sulejmani, aka. The Juliet Report.

Freyja

Dimly lit restaurant with arched windowsFrom the moment you enter, Freyja is something special. Lobby ramp access or the main door brings you to a dining room with dramatic feature walls of deep blue and old bones of exposed brick. High, Gothic-style floor-to-ceiling arched windows overlook the street, setting the stage for an elevated experience. 

Would you like your caviar bump paired with a shot of aquavit, or would you prefer it atop Freyja’s signature waffle? Everything about Freyja is elegant yet restrained, letting the purity of nature shine with foraged and wild elements and house fermentation. Enjoy beef tartare with five spice, unripe plum, potato and sorrel, mussels with smoked paprika, sherry vinaigrette and kelp or a luxurious duck with witlof and nectarine, finishing with a bougie rullekake (Swiss roll) dessert. Cocktails follow a similar vein, leaning on the bright, herbaceous and aromatic side.

Insider Intel:

  • The ‘Taste of Freyja’ set menu is the best way to experience the full spectrum of flavour and technique here, and well worth the $139pp splurge.

  • If you’re browsing the drinks menu, two very unique sections will likely catch your eye: Akvavit, the bright, somewhat savoury Scandinavian spirit, and Snaps, their Danish fruit brandies. Go on, give it a sip.

Higher Ground

650 Little Bourke St, Melbourne, VIC 3000

 

Large converted warehouse cafeOne of the OG elevated cafes of the Melbourne scene. Higher Ground’s main entrance has both steps and step-free paths opening into a cavernous post-industrial church of brunch: high ceilings, lift-accessible mezzanine levels and tall windows, with a ground-floor accessible bathroom.

Higher Ground is still whipping up creative spins on now-traditional brunch dishes, like prawn toast benedict with Chinese doughnut, fluffy ricotta hotcake with seasonal toppings, coffee rubbed wagyu brisket with wild mushrooms and classic avo toast as a pretzel with whipped ricotta and poached egg. Definitely get a side of truffle fries for the Wagyu cheeseburger with black garlic dressing. The classics, just with a little sophistication.

  • Prefer your coffee as an espresso martini? They also serve cocktails!

  • This might be the only place in Melbourne with a ‘croffle’ on the menu: a croissant pressed into a waffle for extra crunch, here served with crispy fried chicken, gochujang and smoked cream cheese.

Old Palm Liquor

Plate of braised beefA stunning date night spot (even if the date is yourself and a good book), Old Palm Liquor oozes cool. The step-free main entrance brings you into the hip front vinyl bar with bottle-lined walls and Hi-Fi setup, all dark features and soft, flattering light. 

Take a seat at the bar, peeking into the open kitchen with its captivating flame grill. Or head out back for the cosy, spacious lounge and dining space, with a fireplace, fringed carpets and houseplants. Sun streams in from the skylight and glass doors leading to the outdoor courtyard and accessible bathroom. 

What’s on the menu? Think, ‘wine bar over fire’: blistered, woodfired flatbread brushed with toum, served with labneh and sumac, flame-kissed Wagyu striploin with berbere butter, pan-fried gnocchi, crisp on the outside, pillowy on the inside and spice roasted pumpkin with sunflower cream. Complete the occasion with a chocolate cremeaux and a cocktail menu of solid classics you could spend a lifetime on.

  • Slow down on weekends with their three-course Saturday Long Lunch until 4pm.

  • Bahama Gold is their casual walk-in-only wine bar next door, where you can also buy 1L takeaway bottles of their house wines on tap for just $22.

Barra

There’s spanner crab arepas or fried cheese rolls with guava and quince chutney for a touch of Venezuela, Mexican influence in a yellow mole tostada and the steamed corn tamale, Colombian-style tres leches and buñuelos, fried cassava bread, an Ox tongue skewer with Peruvian dried chilli and steaks ‘del Asador’ in the Argentinian tradition. 

The footpath tables are perfect for beverage deals from Tuesday to Saturday, or come inside the step-free entrance to a smart-casual diner with chequered floors, warm timber and soft caramel browns. It’s the perfect retreat to relax and explore Latin America while watching the world go by.

  • Keep an eye out for wine events spotlighting Latin American vineyards and varietals (Argentinian Malbec, anyone?).

  • For $59, you enjoy an array of Barra’s favourite snacks alongside a refreshing Sanpellegrino spritz. Monday to Saturday, 12-6pm.
