After a successful sold-out debut in 2011, The Art of the Brick Immersive LEGO exhibition returns to Melbourne for a second time at The Showgrounds in mid-April, this time as an immersive experience. This globally acclaimed exhibition, which redefines the intersection of LEGO and art, uses over one million LEGO bricks to present over 100 pieces within a 360-degree setting, bringing the childhood toy to life.
The worldwide phenomenon, which revolutionises perceptions of both LEGO and art, stems from the creative vision of Nathan Sawaya, a former New York City corporate lawyer. Nathan’s transformation of plastic bricks into contemporary LEGO art earned him the distinction of being the only person globally recognized as both a LEGO Master Model Builder and a LEGO Certified Professional.
Among the impressive sculptures, an enormous version of Yellow is Sawaya’s most famed sculpture and the highlight of the exhibition. The epic installation boasts 250 kinetic LEGO skulls and is accompanied by a 400-square-metre immersive gallery—a collaborative effort with Australian photographer Dean West, showcasing endangered species in their natural environments.
Another immersive gallery, Larger Than Life, features some of the most giant LEGO sculptures ever made, including a 30-foot long Big Swimmer and a 360-degree digital projection, rivalling Yellow for the star of the exhibition.
Visitors can harness their inner childhood LEGO dreams by colouring in their favourite LEGO sculptures and watching them spring to life in 3D on the gallery’s big screen at the interactive shop, where you can also take home LEGO toys that you’ll never want to LE-GO of.
Tickets will be officially available now. Book yours here.
