Step Into The Future Past In NGV’s Upcoming Japanese Modernism Exhibition

By: Ben Tyers

You only have to walk through the front door of the NGV to realise what an amazing asset the gallery is to Melbourne.

With exhibitions currently showcasing the likes of KAWS, Keith Haring, and Jean-Michel Basquiat, you'd excuse the NGV curators for taking it easy this year. But, of course, that's not the case.

Japanese Modernism will kick off at NGV from Friday 28 of February and 'looks at the creative art and design of this period with a focus on the increasingly socially liberated status of Japanese women during the 1920s and 1930s'.

The exhibition will feature mid-century works which showcase when traditional Japanese art and aesthetics intersected with European life and culture, and the creation of Asian art deco paintings, prints, and fashion.
