Melbourne Central Is Getting A $170 Million Overhaul—Here’s What’s In Store

Construction is officially underway at Melbourne Central, where a whopping $170 million expansion is expected to reshape the CBD shopping centre into a markedly larger dining, entertainment, and retail destination. The project, delivered by GPT Group, Maben, and ARM Architects, will add around 7,800 square metres across levels three and four of the precinct. By the time it’s completed in 2028, Melbourne Central’s total retail footprint will land at around 63,000 square metres. 

What’s Changing At Melbourne Central?

The Melbourne Central expansion centres around three major additions: a large-format entertainment venue, a new dining precinct with over ten incoming foot retailers, and Victoria’s first flagship Books Kinokuniya store. Kinokuniya is Japan’s largest bookstore chain that’s known for carrying manga, graphic novels, art books, and Japanese stationery, and poses a significant new drawcard for a centre that already attracts more than 55 million visitors each year. 

When Is Kinokuniya Melbourne Central Opening?

Ahead of the permanent flagship’s arrival in the first half of 2028, Kinokuniya will open a temporary store on level two of Melbourne Central. Managing Director Satoshi Yada has cited Melbourne’s status as a UNESCO City of Literature and the centre’s strong connection with young audiences as key reasons for choosing the new location. 

What Does This Mean For Nightlife In Melbourne?

The GPT Group has flagged its ambition to position Melbourne Central as an 18/7 destination where trading hours are extended to better serve the city after dark. Combined with the new entertainment hub and an expanded dining precinct, this new project is making a deliberate effort to bolster the CBD’s evening economy. 

When Will The Expansion Be Finished?

The full Melbourne Central expansion is expected to be completed in 2028.
