Semi Permanent Is Returning To Melbourne With Never Permanent, A One-Day Festival Of Big Ideas

By

From the creators of Semi-Permanent, the most prestigious event of its kind this half of the globe, comes Never Permanent. In partnership with the City of Melbourne as part of its new arts festival, Now or Never, it’s a one-day splendour of presentations by talented and passionate creatives worldwide. Headlined by the renowned Roman Coppola, LA-based co-writer of Wes Anderson hits such as The Grand Budapest Hotel and Asteroid City, it’s an event you won’t want to miss out on this month.

It’s a well-packed day. Featuring in-depth talks and panel discussions by nine multi-disciplinary innovators based in both Australia and America, it will house an audience of 1,000 in Melbourne’s iconic Royal Exhibition Building. Spanning a history of 20 years, over 50 events have been held in 13 cities worldwide.

Among these creatives is Perth-based Ta-ku. Using a range of mediums to illustrate his Filipino-Maori heritage through elaborate storytelling, Ta-ku is presently in-demand. Perhaps most well-known for his musicality, Never Permanent will house the launch of his first solo album—Songs To Come Home To.

Another one to look out for is NYC-based Mindy Seu—designer, technologist, assistant professor and arts critic. Her award-winning Cyberfeminism Index curates 30 years worth of online activism and net art within one space and was commissioned by Rhizome, a not-for-profit arts organization heralding digital art through its commissions, exhibitions and scholarships.

Headliner Roman Coppola, a master of his craft and a notable figure in the film industry. Partnering multiple times with filmmakers Sophia Coppola and Wes Anderson, his contributions have resulted in an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay. He’s also president and founder of two award-winning production companies—American Zoetrope and The Directors Bureau, as well as founder of crypto film community Decentralized Pictures.

The line-up doesn't stop there, either, with the likes of photographer, filmmaker and Virgil Abloh collaborator Justin Ridler, founder of Mai Mai Hector Ouilhet, and Professor Angie Abdilla all leading the bill.

Never Permanent is part of the City of Melbourne’s Now or Never and takes place Thursday 24th August. Tickets range from $149 (concession) to $299 and you can book here.
