Transit Rooftop Bar Is Getting A Multimillion-Dollar Makeover

After more than two decades at its enviable perch above Federation Square, Transport Hotel's Transit Rooftop Bar is undergoing a major renovation to match its uninterrupted city and Yarra River views.

The multimillion-dollar transformation has seen the rooftop close for a complete overhaul, with works finishing in time for a spring reopening.

What’s Changing At Transit Rooftop?

Studio Y (the team behind Nick & Nora’s) is leading the redesign, which is set to maximise city sightlines and set the mood with dark timber, deep reds, and faceted mirror and metallic surfaces. Two new bars will be added to the existing rooftop, with a custom Martin Audio speaker system completing the new fit-out in style.

Having led the broader Transport Hotel precinct for over 20 years, Tony Twitchett is overseeing a new food menu that focuses on elevated snacks and shared dishes to suit everyone from opening through to late night feeds.

"Transit has always had one of the best positions in Melbourne—there's nowhere quite like it. This renovation is about building a venue that lives up to its unique setting," Twitchett says.

Internationally recognised bartender Matt Linklater has developed a cocktail program that heroes contemporary classics—think the Peach Colada and Transit Espresso Martini, while adding  theatrical flourishes like smoke and frozen glassware to the offering.

Steering the entertainment, Melbourne music agency WAT Artists is curating a vinyl-led music program and roster of DJs to put the impressive new audio system to use.

When Does Transit Rooftop Reopen?

Transit Rooftop Bar is currently closed for its first phase of works, with Transport Public Bar and Taxi Kitchen remaining open throughout. The rooftop is set to reopen at Federation Square in spring 2026. While we don't have an exact date yet, we'll keep you updated as more information becomes available.
