Victoria’s Free Public Transport: When It Ends, What Happens Next And Everything You Need To Know
The initial call by the Labor Government to make public transport free came into effect on 31 March and was only set to run for one month, but was later extended for a whole extra month, until 31 May.
Now, from 1 June, public transport will run at half price until the end of the year.
It's welcome news for Victorians, as fuel prices remain high and the cost of living puts serious pressure on households across the state.
That means that for a full fare myki user, the daily cost of transport will come to $5.70. For those with a myki pass, reimbursements will be available.
“Half-price fares deliver even greater savings for commuters—giving you more options to leave the car at home," says Minister for Public and Active Transport, Gabrielle Williams.
The rules state that airport buses, ferries and privately-run services are excluded from the discounted travel, and trips are limited to those solely within Victoria (with an exception for travel to Albury, Mount Gambier and Deniliquin). While you don't need to tap on during the free travel period, you will have to from 1 June.
