The verdict

Housed in a terrace on Gertrude Street in Fitzroy, Basta Osteria (ex Casa Ciuccio) is the brainchild of Fabio Candolo, a Sicilian restaurateur turned avid Melburnian.

Basta translates to 'enough', which is pretty appropriate. The food is humble and delicious, made from fresh, seasonal ingredients. Whack on a curated wine list (with some handpicked bottles from Mendoz, Chablis and the Mornington Peninsula). There's a real family feel to the atmosphere, and that translates into the food. There's a mix of antipasti, pasta and 'Secondi' on offer. Think Pumpkin and gorgonzola arancini balls, beef carpaccio with a wicked vinaigrette, or larger dishes like the lamb ravioloni, served with potato cream, broadbeans and a pink pepper sauce. Absolutely delish.

Casa Ciuccio fans, don't worry, the soul of the place is still there. Basta just feels a little more contemporary. More 2017 than 2007.
