The Verdict

Up top, Carlton! You just got a sweet new organic grocer and juice bar.

It’s called Aunt Maggie’s, a wholefoods retailer, cafe and juice emporium. You might have heard the name before—the brand already has a couple of retail spots in Fitzroy and Malvern. Now it’s arrived in good ol’ Lygon Court, just below the Nova.

Maggie’s in Carlton is going to be a little different. For one thing, it’s got a 40-seat on-site cafe—Aunty’s Kitchen. Running the pass is acclaimed chef Ben Cordia (ex Plush Pizza and Transformer) who’s designed a gut-busting organic ‘Street Menu’. Think vegetarian tapas like tostadas, kimchi burritos, satay polenta skewers, sweet and sour meatballs, and a range of veggo wraps. There’ll even be take-home gourmet meal kits (vegan and vegetarian, of course) if you’d like to use your microwave for something that isn’t Lean Cuisine.

The weekly highlight is gonna be Cordia’s vegan high tea, served fresh every Sunday. Bookings essential for that one.

Of course Maggie’s built its rep largely on the wholesale retail space, and the Carlton Store will be stocking over 300 locally-sourced food brands. Pana vegan choccies, Kitz’ excellent ‘living food’ range, even a bunch of beauty products like Dr Bronners soaps and Ecotan lotions. If it’s artisan, organic and small-batch, there’s a good chance you’ll get it here.

Lastly, there’s the juice bar, buzzing fresh-squeezed blends like the Elvis Parsley (pear, cucumber, kiwi and parsley), or the Myheart Beets Foryou apple, beetroot, lime and dill. You can also pick up nutritional shots, kombucha and a range of organic smoothies.

Basically all the stuff you need when you went too hard on Tiamo’s double-cheese carbonara the night before #noregrets.

Milkbar

True to its name, Milkbar is serving up your favourite café classics but reimagined: think old-school Aussie milk bar with a touch of Melbourne flair. The option to add a side of yellowfin tuna tartar to your morning eggs on toast, if you will.
