The Verdict
Located on Carlton North’s busy Nicholson Street is a Turkish and Middle Eastern oasis that’s become a Melbourne institution since opening just two years ago. Babajan means “a respectful fatherly term you use when addressing an elderly, kind man,” says Owner Kirsty Chiaplias. And that’s exactly how she wants her customers to feel when they visit.
Chiaplias (previously of The Workers Food Room and Alimentari) brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in the industry, including having worked for Gordon Ramsay himself in London. So it’s safe to say that she knows a thing or two about food.
Inside you’ll find bright décor and a window of fresh salads, cakes, and pastries, including their infamous Persian love cake and ground lamb Borek. Other menu favourites include the Menemen Turkish baked eggs, the Aleppo eggplant toastie (seriously, so good), the braised beef cheek and the crispy skin snapper.
Babajan has recently opened their doors for dinner service on Friday and Saturday nights. Guests can choose from a set menu for $40 a head, or go a la carte and try the 12-hour braised lamb shoulder or BBQ half chicken. Whatever you choose, you’ll be sure to leave with a full heart and a happy tummy.
For those short on time, there’s also plenty of takeaway options, as well as catering packages available.
