The Verdict

Northcote just gained another killer brunch venue in Bicycle Thieves, and it’s got everyone excited with its creative menu and film-inspired name.

The cafe is paying homage to the Italian heritage of Northcote with its inspired name, but the food is influenced by many cuisines resulting in some seriously original dishes.

One of the most popular menu items from Bicycle Thieves is the breakfast ramen, or as co-owner Chris Griffiths likes to call it: “eggs and bacon on toast in soup form”. Ramen fiends and brunch-goers alike are going crazy over this breakfast-ramen hybrid, as to be expected when two of the most cherished, (yet contrasting) cuisines unite.

Another thing that sets this cafe apart is its commitment to making everything from scratch. Besides the house butter, they also make a chocolate and hazelnut spread that features in their jaffle with baked banana, mascarpone and hazelnuts.

With an Instagram-friendly minimalist fit out and seating for more than 100 people, Bicycle Thieves is perfect for groups of all sizes, and might provide us with some much-needed relief from the typical Saturday morning cafe lineup. However, with food like sweet potato and kimchi fritters with poached eggs and slow-braised pork, nothing is guaranteed as Bicycle Thieves continues to grow in popularity.
