The Verdict
Tucked into a tiny spot on the corner of Smith and Gertrude Street, Burnside Café is holding it’s own against Fitzroy’s heavy hitters. It probably helps that on weekdays they’re open at the painfully early time of 6.30, making a (pre) pre-work coffee a hot (literally) option for lucky locals.
Coffee is by Seven Seeds, with three choices (espresso, black or milk) available. There is tea by Storm in a Teacup and a teensy, simple food menu to grab on the go. Think buttery croissants and deliciously simple toast with banana, peanut butter and honey.
A small range of freshly baked treats and bread-bursting sandwiches are also on display. Just in case you wanted to pretend you made your own lunch at work.
