The Verdict
Named after the Crocodile King in Thai folklore, Chalawan is the newbie on Smith Street and not at all your traditional Thai spot. It's the first Australian outlet from the team behind renowned Bangkok venues Hyde and Seek, Peek-A-Boo and Smith. The Collingwood venue is even staffed by an all-star team direct from Bangkok, ensuring that all the zest, vibrancy and vigour of Thai cuisine comes through on every plate!
This gastrobar is serving up contemporary Thai dishes using modern techniques, so don’t come expecting ‘authentic’ cuisine because you’ll be seriously disappointed! The menu at Chalawan is a welcomed changed from your standard curry - here, the menu is made to highlight Australian ingredients and recipes have been adapted to suit local produce, like smoked pork belly served with caramelised stone fruit and a crisp rice cake. The cocktails are just as adventurous and pay homage to their Thai heritage, so expect pandan, toddy palm, kaffir lime, fresh turmeric and chilli. As for dessert, the homemade banana ice cream is to die for!
