The Verdict

With a cult-like following in New South Wales, you’ll find Chargrill Charlie's all over Sydney and beyond. The family-run charcoal chicken specialists have just opened the doors to their second Melbourne-based operation on Glenferrie Road, Malvern. Whilst it’s not the first Victorian store, the all-new Malvern chicken HQ will likely follow suit to its Camberwell counterpart building a devoted fan base to the surrounding area.

Ryan Sher, the director of Chargrill Charlie's explains why Malvern was the obvious choice for a Victorian location; “the community in Malvern has a family feel, and that’s what Chargrill Charlie’s is all about".  Resting on a leafy corner amongst the hustle of Glenferrie Road, the new store has a homely rustic feel with exposed brick walls with contrasting paint peels and plants hanging throughout. With plenty of light pouring in its open and welcoming aesthetic is almost as enticing as what lies beyond the other side of the bar. 

The menu is completely loaded with a selection of charcoal chicken options, including whole and half-cut, stacked burgers, zesty and hearty salads, roast vegetables and even a mac-n-cheese. Unsurprisingly, the chicken here is the standout, the chargrill rotisserie at Charlie’s has a no-mess approach which means you’re getting all that perfect charr without the dusty, carcinogenic stuff; leaving you with a super-succulent and fresh full-flavoured chicken that tears right from the bone.
