The Details

The verdict

A newcomer to the northside’s buzzing brunch scene, Coco & Thyme is a beautiful new venue that’s popped up on St George’s Road, Fitzroy North. Putting its own unique twist on regular brunch fare, the team behind the café in Fitzroy North have renovated what was once a fine dining space, transforming it into a fantastic modern café and eatery. Taking inspiration from Middle Eastern flavours, a love of coffee and a deep-seeded enthusiasm for sharing both with friends and family, the result is warm and welcoming, filled with daylight, and home to some of the most creative breakfast and lunch fare there is – nothing short of a Melbourne brunch masterpiece!

Serving locals with quick take-away coffees or lazy weekend breakfast dates, as well as long lunches complete with classic cocktails, Coco & Thyme delivers fresh culinary ideas. If you’re sick of sitting down to plain ol’ avo on toast, this menu will come as a breath of fresh air. Bursting with creative flavours, you’ll find classics alongside new creations and, whether vegetarian, gluten free, kid-friendly or otherwise, each and every one is a corker.

If vego options are what you came for, the house-made Forbidden Rice is your saviour: black rice with sugar snaps, green beans and sprouts, beetroot, pumpkin, pomegranite and heaps of tasty nuts and seeds are topped with a poached egg to create a healthy, filling dish full of crisp flavours. Looking for a reworked classic? The St. Benny replaces the usual greasy fritters with panko crumbed choux potatoes, ham hock, charred apple, cider hollandaise and perfectly poached eggs. And if you’re ALL about the meat, the Meatloaf Cupcake is a playful take on a rich wagyu and veal meatloaf, which comes topped with mash icing, broccolini, greens and bois boudrin marinade.

Coco & Thyme isn’t only for the hipster moustache-sporting adults of the suburb – mums and dads can bring their bambinos in for a coffee and brunch platter in a friendly environment. The stunning space has enough rooms for prams of all shapes and sizes, and with a kids menu for junior brunch fanatics that includes an almond crusted chicken and avocado toastie and a fairy bread ice-cream sandwich (!) nobody will be going hungry.

The final gem in Coco & Thyme’s tasty crown is its bookings policy. Say goodbye to that 45-minute queue before sipping your first flat white of the day - because the geniuses behind this café in Fitzroy North will actually let you book! Whether it’s a breakfast catch-up, lunch with your nearest and dearest, or a private party in the jaw-droppingly beautiful gallery and events space, the Coco & Thyme team will happily let you relax ‘til your heart’s content at a reserved table – simply give them a call on 03 9482 3002 ahead of time.
