The Details
The Verdict
Crooked Letters quickly became a southside institute when they set up shop in their Murray Street corner store several years back; the locale was quintessentially Melbourne, as were the bagels.
Recently, passersby would have already noticed that corner is now void of coffee and brunchtime meals, though anyone hunting down the doughy circles can rest easy in the news that Crooked Letters has moved just around the corner—into an ex-laundromat on Prahran’s High Street.
Just like the Murray Street store, there’s a certain community spirit that lives on at the new digs. You’ll still likely bump into your neighbour, mate or friend’s ex when waiting for a coffee, and you can still order up on that hefty pastrami bagel that most of the postcode raves about.
There are several other more substantial numbers worthy of your mid-morning appetite, like a chorizo bagel with Swiss cheese and an egg, as well as a classic breakfast bagel with bacon, egg, BBQ relish along with the usual trimmings. Those after something lighter, or who prefer their bagels sans meat, should head straight to halloumi or avo options.
On coffee duties is Allpress, so you know your brew is in good hands until it’s in yours. From there, you’re free to nab one of the tables out front—they’re hot property, so be quick—otherwise, get it to go and start your day with one of the best bagels this side of The Yarra.
