The Verdict
"Holy crap." That’s a pretty accurate summary of our internal thoughts the minute we laid eyes on a Duke Pizza. This is officially the biggest delivery pizza available in Melbourne. We’re talking a 24-inch diameter (that’s a 64cm pizza box, just FYI). Basically two footlong subs, stacked end on end.
Duke says this behemoth is for “house parties, corporate parties or just a casual night in”. If this is your idea of a casual night in, you’re a bloody champion. Just think of the microwaved leftovers the next morning...
So where can you order this thing? Duke has just popped up at the top end of Elizabeth St in the city, and it’s doing delivery within a 3km radius: pretty much the CBD, Docklands, Carlton, Parkville, Collingwood, East Melbourne, Princess Hill, Kensington and North Melbourne. If you live in any of those suburbs, your Friday nights just sorted themselves.
Let’s pop the hood and take a look at the pizza menu. All the classic combos are there, plus a few funky alternatives. Try the Mr Wolf (braised lamb, rosemary, cherry tomatoes, onion, goats cheese and a garlicky whomp of tzatziki) or the Finocchio (verdure, crispy pork and fennel sausage, chilli oil, roasted garlic and rosemary). There's also a bunch of vegan and gluten-free options, if you swing that way.
The crust is thin, Neapolitan style, cooked to crispy perfection. The dough is handmade and proofed for a slow 48-hours, cooked fresh from sustainably sourced flour and local-made Italian cheeses.
Pizza lovers, give this 24-inch bad boy a test drive. Maybe bring some friends...
