The Verdict
In an industrial backstreet just off Sydney Rd, at the bottom of the Nightingale Housing Precinct, there’s a tiny cafe doing some pretty interesting things.
The name is For Change, it’s a new micro-cafe, hardly more than a hole-in-the-wall really, which spills out onto Florence St via bench seats and old milk crates. The team are committed to sustainable living, which is why they offer up a discount if you grab your brew in a reusable cup. Speaking of coffee, For Change slings a Five Senses blend all day, plus an El Durazno peach filter. You can also grab a mean iced coffee, which comes foamed or filtered, depending on your preference.
Food-wise, the menu is deliberately stripped back. There’s various types of house made cookies, brownies and muffins, and they’ve got your furry-friend in mind with their home-made dog treats. In winter they sling porridge and for lunch, think vegetarian toasties using the freshest sourdough by Oven St Bakery, alongside some of their top-notch pastries. Plus
Of course the best bit about For Change is the mission. After basic staff costs and overheads, all profits go straight to youth homelessness and to feeding the 1 in 8 Australian children who go to school hungry every day, supporting charities such as Eat Up Australia and Launch Housing.
This cafe with a course is now one of three, so if Brunswick isn’t the spot for you, check out their Bellfield or Middle Park joints.
