The Verdict
The newest addition to the Hakata Gensuke family is in Carlton, and what better place to drop a ramen joint than on Lygon street?
Founder of Hakata Gensuke, Mr Yoshimura, is a household name in Japan, constantly pursuing innovations in ramen. The restaurant’s multiple locations in Melbourne each have their own die-hard followings, and we expect the Carlton location will fall prey to the same type of hype.
This Hakata Gensuke is a modest yet cozy eatery, perfect for tucking into a hot bowl of ramen on a rainy day. Unique to the Carlton location, they specialise in Yatai Ramen. ‘Yatai’ translates to open-air food stalls that are characteristic of Fukuoka, Japan. Fukuoka also originated the Hakata Tonkotsu ramen, a humble bowl of noodles that is loved by local Hakata people and lovers of ramen everywhere.
Here you can expect all your favourites; some of which include the Signature Tonkotsu ramen, Black Tonkotsu and for wild ones out there, the God Fire Ramen which comes in four increasingly burning spice levels. Is there a better way to fight the encroaching winter than slurping on some delicious ramen? We think not.
