The Verdict
Richmond has just acquired one of Melbourne’s most in-demand hair salons, and we’re not mad about it.
Recently opened, Hermiz Salon is the solo venture of Hermiz Daniel, who has become a regular on the fashion and beauty scene (and probably your Instagram feeds). Having won multiple awards, including this year's Hair Expo Victorian Hairdresser of the Year and Editor’s Choice, it’s safe to say, he knows his stuff.
Having worked in the industry for ten years, Hermiz honed his skills under the legendary Joey Scandizzo for seven of those. So it was only natural he opened his first salon with the backing of his mentor, along with one of the industries best stylists, John Scandizzo, and business partner Joseph Semaan. With design cues from the Joey Scandizzo salon, Hermiz has created something sleek and modern.
“Having a space that is creative and beautiful is great, but the most important thing is for it to be practical, you need to be able to get around it easily,” explains Hermiz. The Swan Street space is a breath of fresh air; mirrors and salon chairs line each side of the building, with a long communal table in the centre of the space, for artists to colour their client’s hair. The open design encourages collaboration and conversation and gives the space a welcoming feel.
The Richmond location choice was a no-brainer, with the support of Joey Scandizzo (who had his eye on the space for a while), Hermiz landed on a shop front in a prime location. “It’s young and edgy,” says Hermiz, “it’s got all the best cafes, all the best bars, all the best restaurants”. And it’s the perfect fit, up and coming, easy going and on trend, all things which Hermiz salon embodies.
Your eye is immediately drawn to the large marble bench situated at the front of the salon, a nod to the Joey Scandizzo empire. The space is flooded with natural light; soft wooden floors contrast the contemporary finishes effortlessly.
Chatting to Hermiz, it’s easy to see how he’s established himself so quickly in such a competitive industry, “I never wanted to be a hairdresser” he laughs. Hermiz grew up in Jordan and moved to Melbourne at 15 years old. With a love for fashion, hairdressing was always something he had on hand but never something he saw as a career path, “the places it’s taken me, and opportunities it’s given me, is amazing”.
Given his talent, it’s hard to imagine Hermiz doing anything else. Quickly becoming one of the most in-demand hair stylists, when he’s not booked out for the Spring Racing Carnival or Brownlow, he’s attending and working at Fashion Weeks. With Hermiz at the helm, you can expect Hermiz Salon to become one of Australia’s best.
