The Verdict
Apparently the most authentic way to drink beer is in a traditional beer hall, but we can’t all jet off to Germany whenever we’re craving a pint. Lucky we’ve got Hophaus to fill the void, eh?
Perched on the second floor of Southgate, Hophaus Beer Garden is the slice of Germany you’ve been searching for; a place where you can experience the taste of a proper Bavarian Beer Hall without having to leave the country (or wear lederhosen).
The creators behind Hophaus have spun a modern Melbourne twist on the Oktoberfest-style ‘bier hall’. Inside the art-deco space, not only can you feast on their delicious eats, you can feast your eyes on their open rotisserie-fired kitchen and centrepiece glazed polychrome beer bar, with 30 different labels on-tap. We’re talking a rotation of the finest German, Austrian, Belgian and Czech beers from the most renowned breweries in the world.
What’s on the menu? You’ll find a common theme. Smoked meats, wood-fired and rotisserie delicacies, plus modern twists on classic European favourites. From 11.30am ‘til late, you can enjoy smaller bites and bar snacks as well as substantial dishes like the Crispy Pork Knuckle, served with haus sauerkraut and spiced apple puree. Don’t be afraid to pig out, literally: group bookings can order an entire suckling pig, smoked and slow roasted over Hophaus’ coal pit. Not your typical Friday night...Prost!
