THE VERDICT
Not many things rival the sweet satisfaction of the post-beach fish n' chips binge. And that's pretty much the concept behind Barwon Heads new chippery, Jetty Road Fish n' Chips.
This is one helluva unique foray into the F&C arena, and the twist isn’t just the crinkle-cut chips. These guys are bringing a new element of quality to the game—and the location has to be one of the best in Victoria. Buoy oh buoy, this looks gooood.
Set on the idyllic Barwon Heads estuary (literally—it's right on the sand) you’ll spot this pastel oasis from miles away. It’s fish and chips, but not as you know it. Don't worry—your chippies will still be salt-ravaged and seagull-enticing. The catch is all in the catch of the day. It's cooked in a unique semolina batter, golden, crunchy and crazy fresh. Of course, it helps when the ocean is literally 20m away.
Jetty Road is adjoined to At The Heads—already a firm favourite on the fridge magnets of locals and holidayers alike. Think of this as the dinkier little sister, designed to fulfil your takeaway needs (minus the guilty conscience).
The menu is compact, but it's got everything you're looking for. Crispy calamari, sourced directly out of Queenscliff and cooked in a drool-inducing chickpea flour and tossed in lemon myrtle salt (!!). Fresh crab burgers with kale slaw and wasabi mayo. Beetroot and feta salad, served with mixed grains and balsamic. There's even a banging cheeseburger on there. Executive chef Alexander McIntosh has worked at Rockpool and The Atlantic, so that gives you an idea of the pedigree.
And when the sand surpasses that volcanic temperature threshold, these guys even have 100% natural Ice Pops on offer, made from cold-press juices. Oof.
So...roadtrip anyone? We're getting hungry.
