The Verdict

It's a sleek-looking shop right in the heart of the CBD, situated on Swanston just a few steps from Bourke Street, Miilk Cake Studio is the all-new cake shop harnessing South East Asian flavours.

"My father grew up in Singapore, our family owned and worked in local bread stores, and now he's the one baking at the shop," says co-owner Tia Tan. This legacy is continued with a full-on family affair at Miilk Cake, with both of Tia's parents and even cousins and close family friends on staff at the shop.

Whether you tackle it by the slice or go the full monty, the cake range features 21 different options, including several from the team's Singaporean heritage as well the Vietnamese influence of one of Miilk Cake's head bakers.

"We've got a lot of friends and family now that give us a bit of inspiration in the kitchen, from Vietnamese to Thai and even Japanese, it works well because I think even in Singapore you'll find that it's very multicultural."

This takes shape on the menu with creations like the 'Tropical Paradise' an ode to the flavours of South East Asia with a light pandan sponge with layers of mango cream and jelly.

There's also the 'First Love' which combines lychee, strawberry and cream into a perfectly balanced three-tier sponge cake, a range of the French classic Chiffon cakes, a Hoijcha (green tea) number and the nostalgic 'Milo Dino' with a whipped milo and Singaporean coffee (Kopi) cream and Milo crumb.

Primarily a takeaway operation, the space still accommodates up to 15 for those who prefer to tackle the goods on-site. In addition to the slices, there's also a range of pastries as well as coffee, and speciality drinks from pandan and ube lattes, milk and iced teas and more.

Miilk Cake Studio opens on Saturday 29 July and to celebrate they'll be handing out free slices. Get more details over here.

Frankie’s Pie Shop

Say hello to Frankie’s Pie Shop—bringing the fluffy, crispy pastry snack to the Fitzroy Mills Market in a not-so-normal kinda way. What we mean is you won’t see your classic pie flavours in this joint, which is expected when it’s brought to life by an ex-Farmer’s Daughters and Marion chef, Francesca Giorgi Monfort.
