THE VERDICT

Mr L’s gives big Great Gatsby vibes, with an elegant harlequin colour scheme and chandeliers to boot, as well as a hefty outdoor terrace perfect for their bottomless brunch situation.

This little New York-centric diner on Toorak Road is the perfect spot for a cheeky mid-week meal out or a terrace cocktail. But it’s the restaurant itself where you’ll find yourself most at home with a bistro-style menu and familiar wine list, making dining easy and delicious.

Tuck into a spring chicken with sauce verte, exceptional little snacks like roast lamb meatballs in a smoky tomato sauce and a cracked burrata tomato tarte (a must on a hot day). Mains-wise we’re looking at big grilled steaks, Wimmera duck, gnocchi and barra.

The wine list has zingy sauvignon blancs from Marlborough, and slurpable local reds—and cocktails too here are savvy twists on familiar classics, with the obligatory espresso martini featured as well as some punchy rum drinks.

The proprietor, Mr L himself comes from a cafe background, and his first restaurant foray is looking bright with its Mediterranean-leaning menu and constant stream of South Yarra’s who’s who pouring in and out the doors.
