The Verdict

Brighton is a suburb that brunches with the best of them. Cafes basically outnumber people here. But try searching Bay St for a classy cocktail and date-night dinner and you’re going to come up short. The suburb, heaving at 10am on a Sunday, kind of winds down after dark…until now anyway.

Introducing Mr & Mrs P, the latest exposed-brick lovechild from restaurateur couple Greg and Georgia Poliwodzinski (hence the ‘P’). Having opened their portfolio with Treehouse Lounge in Balaclava, their latest digs are giving Bay St a much-needed late-night tszuj. The décor is warm wine bar meets upmarket gastro pub: red brick feature walls, plenty of oaky timber, soft lighting and greenery poking out from behind bottles of Belvedere and Glenmorangie. There’s a more sophisticated dining space up top (with a back bar, fireplace and wall-mounted telly for functions), plus a cheeky beer garden out back. Basically the complete Friday night package.

Hungry? Executive Chef Matthew Butcher has got you covered. We recommend the fried zucchini blossoms (served with a creamy mix of goats’ curd and roasted eggplant), knock-out spicy prawn tacos (in lettuce cups–this is Brighton, after all) and a Robbins Island Wagyu beef on buttered Risoni will change your outlook on life. Wash it all down with a My Lady Beverley: P’s frothy Bacardi oro, licor 43, lime and cinnamon blend, served in a classy AF crystal coupe.
