The Verdict

You’ve got to love a burger joint that just goes the whole hog. Monstrous stacks oozing cheese and aioli out the sides, an entire menu dedicated to pimped-out fries, and a shakes list that includes Nutella, Salted Carmel & Coconut and Milo & Tim Tam. Sweet Jesus, it can only be Nostimo & Co, Elsternwick’s newest burger bar. That sound you hear? That’s the sound of our self-discipline crumbling around us.

Nostimo opened a couple of months ago and is already getting a bit of a rep along Glen Huntly Road. Owner Keith Theodoridis wanted to create American-style burgers, with a bit of a Greek twist. Think golden-fried saganaki fillets seasoned with salt and lemon, or shakes spiked with crumbled up Halva and cinnamon.

The burgers are gratuitously big (just how we like ‘em) but you get the feeling Nostimo’s chefs have thought the menu through. There’s a good amount of cheese, the patties are toasted dark and crispy, and the soft brioche-style buns offer a firm hand-hold. Our picks are definitely the Classic With Cheese or the Southern Fried Avo, a jaw-stretching stack of golden fried chook, avocado, cheese, crispy bacon rashers, tomato, kale slaw and chipotle sauce. So long, diet. It was nice knowing you.
