The Verdict

Not exactly what you expect on a Melbourne rooftop. Six gleaming Airstream camper trailers, fresh from the 1970s, converted into boutique chalets. Whoever reckoned we hit peak Melbourne a few years ago clearly didn’t bank on this one.

Notel’s the brainchild of James Fry, who co-owns the three-story carpark below with his Dad. For years he was torn on what to do with the roof space. Pool? Cinema? Restaurant? Eventually he settled on a hotel...but not just any hotel.

The Airstreams were sourced from the States, shipped over and converted into designer rooms. Each one comes with an iPad, virtual concierge, Netflix and an in-room minibar (don’t worry, it’s all free). You even get an ensuite bathroom with shower – not bad for an old trailer.

Feeling flush? Upgrade to the ‘Airstream With Benefits’. It comes with its own hot tub overlooking Flinders Lane. Niiiice.
