Fish and chips laid out on a towel on St Kilda Beach.

The Verdict

After a long, cold winter, Melbourne is finally scoring some good news. Public gatherings of up to five, forecasts exceeding well above the 10° mark and daylight savings arriving—those lucky enough to live within 5km of the St Kilda foreshore can tie all of the above together with a feed from the just-reopend Paper Fish.

Known for their top-quality fish and ingredients, this Stokehouse’s beachfront booth is ready to fulfil your long-overdue seafood cravings. This time, they’re back with your favourite finger-licking dishes including oysters shucked, the crumbed fish burger with homemade gurnard and tartare and of course, their signature fish and chips.

What’s even better is their perfectly-fried crispy batter that's been around for over 15 years—safe to say they’ve nailed the formula. They’ve also added new variations to the menu, ranging from local snapper to a king prawn roll in a milk bun topped with smoky mayo and diced tomato.

You can also spoil your palate with their rustic and humble side dishes which includes chips with chicken salt as well as a classic Greek salad with Meredith’s feta on the top, and you can finish it off with a watermelon granita or a glass of soft drink—or both.

Throw off the flip-flops, chuck down a towel and order some of the best fish and chips going around from Thursday to Sunday, 12pm to 7pm.
