The Verdict
Inspired by the addictive flavours of South East Asia, with a menu that encourages you to share small plates between yourselves, Rice Paper Scissors has been a staple of the Melbourne food scene for over 10 years now.
Although cutlery is obligatorily provided, eating with your hands is heavily championed—it has been said that it gives you a deeper connection to the food. Speaking of which, boy is there a lot to choose from on the Rice Paper Scissors menu.
Meat eaters to vegans are catered to, and there are even some gluten-free options for good measure. Small plates are their speciality, which is perfect for sharing. Some of our favourites include the sticky soy tofu, the crispy coconut cup, and the wok-tossed greens (make sure to add some pork belly, real or mock to it). The Laotian chicken curry is appropriately decadent and flavorful, and the smoked broccoli salad is another must-order.
Of course, it’s not a complete meal without a drink or two to wash it down, and the cocktail list is extensive. Their Vietnamese espresso martini is a welcome twist on an old favourite, and the Tom Yum Yum mix of rum, vodka, and coconut water, as well as red chilli, lemongrass and ginger, is a refreshing blend of flavours. They’ve also got a generous wine list, as well as beers and ciders, but if alcohol isn’t your bag, they’ve also got some solid mocktails on offer.
Dark decor and soft lighting give Rice Paper Scissors a sultry yet vibrant energy. Although there are two locations to choose from, Rice Paper Scissors Fitzroy and Rice Paper Scissors CBD share the fun, cozy vibes, as well as the menu. In the Fitzroy venue, their private dining room, Aunty Kim’s, is a dedicated spot for birthdays, corporate functions, and even hen’s nights.
It has a capacity for 30-seated or up to 100-standing, so it covers most events you could think to host. Although we’re a city with restaurants on every corner, all these elements combined make Rice Paper Scissors Melbourne’s elevated street-food destination.
