The Verdict

Hey Melbourne, we know you love your coffee and we know you love supporting local businesses, so we’re stoked to introduce you to this new espresso bar opening north of the river. You might already know Rumble Coffee Roasters—they’ve been wholesaling their coffee since launching in 2014—but now you can enjoy a brew in their Kensington precinct.

Rumble came about when New Zealand-born friends and business partners Matt Hampton and Joe Molloy joined forces to highlight the importance of ethical coffee production and transparency in the industry. The duo previously spent decades running award-winning cafes and espresso bars, developing a passion for specialty coffee and the cafe scene, so they’re the ideal pair to go to for your daily caffeine hit.

These guys are known as trailblazers in the industry. In 2018 they launched The Transparency Project and they were the first coffee roasters in Australia to publish pricing data on all their coffees. By revealing the costs in their supply chain, they’re working to improve the wages and conditions of coffee farmers around the world, while educating people on ethical production. We love to see it.

They also keep sustainability in mind every step of the way. They use recyclable and reusable packaging materials and adhere to responsible waste management systems. They’ve reduced their carbon emissions by 83% since purchasing their new Loring roaster, and they also encourage customers to buy in bulk, return coffee bags for recycling and reuse containers.

After six years of roasting, the team are now opening the doors to their brand new espresso bar right in front of their roastery. The venue will be a hub for coffee lovers, offering a rotation of single origins and a ‘filter coffee of the week’, plus masterclasses, training and cupping sessions. The bar is an ode to Molloy and Hampton’s passion for sustainable and ethical coffee production, so head down to grab a cuppa joe and support this business making a difference.

The espresso bar is open Monday to Friday between 8.30am and 2.30pm, while the roastery and retail store is open from 8.30am to 4.30pm.
