The Verdict
One of the most underrated cuisines in Melbourne has gotten a delicious, vibrant, kimchi-filled facelift. Specialising in modern South Korean flavours, Seoulja Boy’s menu explodes with chilli, fermented vegetables and addictively rich spicy sauce (but seriously, can we please have some to take home?).
The sleek, industrial black and neon pink interior perhaps reflects the menu itself—smart, cheeky with flavours that demand your attention. Kingfish sashimi topped with white kimchi, fish roe with yuzu, soy dressing and a wasabi mayo will win you a second date, while K-fried chicken ribs with a kimchi mayo (we’re still dreaming about it) will be devoured in a blink.
Traditional street-style ddokbokki with chewy cylindrical rice cakes, onion, carrots, cabbage and fish cakes in spicy sauce is a taste of Seoul in Melbourne CBD. Vegans and vegetarians will also be pleased with silky soft fried Korean tofu and stir-fried sweet potato noodles.
Along with cocktails championing lychee and yuzu, soju (the most popular drink in Seoul) and a range of other South Korean drinks (rice wine, anyone?) are on offer. Mixing drinks is always a good idea, right?
