The Verdict

One part 19th century terrace, two parts mod industrial masterpiece. Shanklin is the East’s latest exposed-brick coffee klatch, a cute little Hawthorn-esque cafe that’s bending the breakfast rules.

Shanklin is all about the modern Aussie cuisine, and the menu’s got something to suit even the pickiest brunch-addict. Mostly because there’s an all-day breakfast/lunch thing happening, which means you can order soft-shell crab linguine with your morning flat white, or a post-lunch avo’, goat’s cheese and pistachio dukkah. There’s everything from the classic breakfast burrito to baked eggs with shakshuka with red peppers, cherry tomatoes, chorizo and snow-white wodges of goat’s cheese.

And don’t worry, sweet tooths. Shanklin hasn’t forgotten about you. Start the day right with Nutella-stuffed pancakes, combined with sweet strawberries grilled banana & Oreo crumble (!!) served with a hearty dollop of vanilla ice cream.

Along with the great food comes great coffee. Rotating blends from Kenya, Panama and Guatemala change on a regular basis, and the baristas behind the sparkly new Synesso machine obviously know their way around a steaming wand (that's not a euphemism btw). If you’ve still got room after your baked eggs, check out the mouth-watering muffins and pastries in the front cabinet. Hazelnut meringue with buttercream icing and cranberries...one for the road can’t hurt, right?
