The Verdict

Small Axe Kitchen has really perfected restaurant quality service with the café vibe and after being beautifully renovated, you can choose to cosy up inside or brave the elements on the communal tables outside. The menu follows the typical brunch format, but with welcomed Italian twists. Instead of French toast, you’ll get toasted brioche with whipped cinnamon ricotta and honey—that’s a swap we can get on board with!

If you’re heading in for lunch, try their meatballs served with a slow-cooked egg and pecorino dusting on toast. But the real showstopper here is their breakfast pasta! Think carbonara style with Sicilian-style macaroni combined with sauteed peas, mint and slices of almost-crisp guanciale and a pancetta-like thing made from pork jowl. On top, you’ve got an egg dusted with grated pecorino. And when you cut into that egg, voila, you’ve got yourself a delicious, carby mess that you’ll be dreaming about for weeks.
