The Verdict

Cheese is a multi-billion dollar industry in Australia alone, for a damn good reason. It’s gooey, it’s sharp, it’s tangy, it’s decadent—it makes life worth living on most days.

Enter Supercheese, the speciality store that’s supplying niche stock to cheese enthusiasts. Located in Richmond, Supercheese is looking to give the people what they want: good cheese aplenty.

Supercheese is a venture between Jeremy Spradbery and his wife, Lucy, both long-time players in the cheese game. Passion and sincerity are what sets this shop apart, and Supercheese has both in abundance. “What’s really cool for me is, I know a lot of the producers that have made the cheeses,” says Jeremy, “I’ve been there, I’ve had my hands in the curd.”

With both Australian and internationally produced selections, the emphasis is on quality, distinctiveness, and being able to supply their customers with the best of the best from great producers. “We tell their story, we celebrate their uniqueness, that’s our vibe.”

The store is nestled on the ever-bustling Swan Street, which is home territory for Jeremy. The shop isn’t ostentatious: it’s a cozy space, and the furthermost wall is covered with a macro shot of cheese. The fridges and shelves are packed with every artisanal cheese you could ask for, and they’re staunch supporters of small local producers too.

Brunswick local Lucy Whitlow supplies a Buffalo and Jersey cow milk Tomme rubbed with burnt onion ash, and another Tomme that has been wrapped in poached orange skins. Other rare cheeses on deck include Rogue River Special Reserve Blue, a cheese that’s only made once a year and is wrapped with shiraz leaves that have been soaked in pear brandy.

They’ve also got supplies of cheese accompaniments, such as crackers, fruit pastes and jams, and even handmade cheese knives. They’re currently in the process of selecting a super tight list of select wines to be paired alongside specific cheeses, and they’re looking to start hosting cheese and wine events in-store, so watch this space.
