The Verdict
We think it’s high time Carlton got its first Mexican restaurant, and Taquito definitely delivers on that account. Meaning "little taco" in Spanish, Taquito is gaining popularity in Melbourne's food scene as the new place for authentic, market-fresh Mexican cuisine with a modern twist.
Concerned with authenticity first and foremost, you can trust Alec Villarreal, the Mexican-born owner, and Paul Clarke, his Mexican-obsessed New Zealand-born chef to take you on a culinary journey to Mexico City and beyond.
"We will only serve food you can find on the streets of Mexico," says Alec, thinking fondly of his hometown that inspired him to pursue the culinary arts.
Not many other restaurants have the time (or skill) to make their own tortillas by hand every day, but the folks at Taquito are committed to their vision of only serving the most authentic Mexican fare.
The handmade tortillas are firm yet fluffy, a suitable accompaniment to the succulent meats and veg it comes served with.
And of course, all of your mezcal and tequila needs are covered in the form of a well-stocked front bar and the most helpful bartenders around. Strike up a chat and tell them what you're after, or ask for our favourite cocktail: The Hazy Daze.
The current menu has tuna ceviche, Chile Relleno and sweet potato tacos on offer but is ever-changing depending on the latest seasonal produce.
With happy hour running from 4 PM - 6 PM and found easily near Cinema Nova, the restaurant and bar is the perfect place for dinner and after-work drinks.
