The Verdict

A little art-deco slice of primo beach real estate, with good food to boot. You might be familiar with the Brighton Baths as the hot chip kiosk that breaks up your Sunday Beach Rd ride (#fitlife), or the spot where old people swim in freezing winter waters for no good reason at all. But it’s also home to The Baths Middle Brighton, a shcmancy modern Australian dining room with some killer bayside views.

The Baths does a rotating specials night (come on Mondays to get steak, fries and a creamy béarnaise sauce for a cool $25) but the a la carte menu is a winner too. Start the night with the twice-cooked pork belly with caramelised apple and ginger puree and calvados jus, or a cheeky 1/2 dozen oysters, served natural with a red wine shallot vinaigrette. For mains it’s hard to go past the miso-marinated salmon with choi sum, yuzu mayonnaise and rice crisps.

In good news for crust-haters everywhere, The Baths also now does an afternoon tea, served daily from 2:30pm – 5pm. We’re talking the whole enchilada: fluffy baked scones with jam and clotted cream, macaroons, cheesecakes and lemon tarts, and crust-less ribbon sandwiches with salmon and cream cheese. Perfect for treating the parentals…
