THE VERDICT

The Bon Vivant's Companion is the latest addition to Mornington’s bar scene—marble bench tops, brass detailing, deep timber floors, and splashes of emerald green. It’s moody, sleek and the epitome of a cocktail bar. Which is what they’re calling themselves, but with over 200 Australian spirits on the shelves, and a whisky and gin list that spans across 10 pages, it’s clear the crew are serious about their drinks.

Cocktails first, their bartenders are shaking—and stirring—premium spirits with fresh ingredients. The list is split into four distinct sections: signature cocktails, renditions, Autumn swirls (this will change seasonally), and sweet-styles. There are a few whisky flight options on offer depending on which variation takes your fancy, and you can even scan the nifty QR code on the menu for even more options.

Plates play in the bar snack space, with several bites up to enjoy including a crunchy sourdough served with burnt shallot butter, and a delightful coconut ceviche with pomegranate arils and a kick of chili. Opt for the salumi or cheese selection for something slightly more substantial.

We’ve also been told there’s a hidden speakeasy somewhere in the space behind secret doors. You can go on the hunt yourself or ask for “Jane” at the bar.
