It’s one of the wedding traditions we don’t talk about. Get the bridesmaids to wear hideous dresses so that, by direct comparison, the bride looks like some luminous alien brought down from heaven.

Well not anymore, baby.

Two women are working to change the humble bridesmaid's dress, one wedding at a time. One is Cat Pope, a New York-based stylist who works with some of the biggest names in entertainment and fashion (no biggie, but she’s the stylist to Ivanka Trump). Her partner in couture is Bonnie Sinclair, who cut her teeth at Witchery and Country Rd back here in Aus.

Together they’ve opened The Bridesmaids Studio on Greville St in Prahran. The business is bringing some of the biggest names in the business (including Monique Lhuillier and Jenny Yoo) and letting you pick the colour, size and silhouette.

It’s a gap in the fashion market that no-one’s really trying to fill. There’s a whole industry devoted to making bridal couture that would shame Paris Fashion Week. Bridesmaids dresses are something you spend your leftover budget (or—if you’re a Groom on Don’t Tell The Bride—forget completely).

The Prahran showroom can fit an entire bridal party, and Cat and Bonnie work hard to make the occasion feel special. Prices range from $350 to $550 per dress, and go all the way from size 00 to a US 28 (that’s a 32 Aus).

At the moment, the showroom only stocks dresses, but The Studio team work with every client to help pick out shoes and accessories to match. And last minute brides, chillax, you can put a ‘rush fee’ on the order if you need the dresses ASAP.
