THE VERDICT

Over the years, ramen has become almost synonymous with Melbourne’s food scene. Yet somehow, authentic handmade udon has largely flown under the radar.

Yamamoto Udon Izakaya is here to change that. The walk-in only restaurant is making a strong case for udon to reach the same level of fandom.

At Yamamoto Udon Izakaya, every strand of udon is made entirely by hand at their Bourke Street udon shop and delivered to the restaurant daily. The menu moves from the traditional, like soup udon and Japanese curry udon, to bolder fusion styles like Tan Tan and Mapo Tofu. There’s also a rare appearance from Himokawa noodles; a flat, ultra-wide style of udon that is seldom seen in Australia, and can be chosen as an upgrade on select dishes.

Aside from udon, share plates including beef tataki, takoyaki, fresh oysters, and Unagi Don sit alongside more elevated protein dishes like Wagyu M9 and O’Connor Angus Striploin.

When it comes to drinks, the list is built with the same accessibility in mind as the food. Cocktails, sake carafes, and all house wines by the glass are just $14, Japanese beers on tap are $11, and a Chuhai selection including flavours like lychee, mikan, and watermelon are affordable (and very fun).

Yamamoto Udon Izakaya’s 150-seat space is full of layered timber, moody lighting, and beautiful lanterns in homage to Tokyo’s modern nightlife and Japanese dining alleys. With a bowl of udon in front of you, you’ll feel properly transported.
