Where To Find The Best Banh Mi In Auckland In 2026
While I love most sandwiches, I hold a special place in my heart for a banh mi—one of Vietnam's greatest dishes. Literally meaning bread in Vietnamese (something along the lines of 'baked wheat'), banh mi takes the French baguette up a notch with savoury, creamy, crunchy, spicy and tangy Vietnamese additions.
A good banh mi starts with a super crisp and light baguette, with its distinctive, crackling crust (sometimes still warm from the oven too). It's then filled with a generous layer of rich chicken or pork pate, mayo, slices of Vietnamese cold-cuts or other proteins (we’re looking at you, crispy pork belly), crunchy pickled carrot strands and fresh cucumber, as well as lots of fresh coriander and a kick of chilli to round it all off. It’s the kind of sandwich you’d want to eat whatever time of the day, and luckily for Tāmaki Makaurau, there’s banh mi out there for every time of the day.
Just like the regional differences across Vietnam, the many banh mi spots across Auckland each have their own take on the popular Vietnamese sandwich—from their own secret pate and signature sauce additions, to the variety of fillings, and baking their own rolls fresh everyday. Whether you’re after a traditional Vietnamese ham, or a crispy crackling lid—let this be your guide on where to find the best banh mi in the city.
Here are the best banh mi in Auckland.
Banh Mi Boy
55 Montgomerie Road, Māngere
Image credit: Banh Mi Boy | Facebook
Banh Mi Boy needs no introduction. What started as a humble food truck tucked down a driveway in Māngere from husband and wife team John and Zeena Giang has amassed a large following of regulars, travellers and truckies alike to get their hands on the sell-out banh mi. So much so, that they're now serving their award-winning banh mi out of a dedicated bricks and mortar location.
From traditional Vietnamese-style with a pork cold cut combo of chả lụa (Vietnamese ham), xá xíu (sweet barbecue pork), and gelatinous pork brawn (along with all the pork pate, Viet mayo, cucumber, carrots and coriander additions), to their popular crispy pork belly (the latter, available on Tuesdays and Saturdays only), these banh mi are not to be slept on.
Insider Intel:
- They also have limited runs of special one-off flavours inspired by classics (and with their own twist). At the time of writing, the latest promo was for Banh Mi Lá Lốt featuring grilled pork mince wrapped in betel leaves—a riff on a Vietnamese street food classic.
Mr T.’s Baked Goods & Eatery
210 Onehunga Mall, Onehunga

We came here for pho, but when I saw banh mi on the menu, I knew I had to get a side of that too. Located right on the main Onehunga strip, Mr T’s is owned by husband and wife duo baker Dieu Tran (Mr. T) and chef Trinh Tran (Mrs T). Together, they’re bringing a mix of classic bakery goods and brunch options, along with Vietnamese faves on the menu (making it even harder to choose just one thing). The one thing you do need to try, though, is their classic banh mi. Mr T. gets up at the crack of dawn to bake the fresh rolls (as well as his legendary sourdough)—and when you bite into that Banh Mi Thit Nuong, with the crispy baguette exterior giving way to a soft, butter-brushed crumb, you’ll understand why they’re known for their bakery offerings. It’s unfussy and classic, with all the comforting additions of grilled marinated pork, homemade chicken liver pate, pickled daikon and carrot, fresh cucumber, coriander and sliced fresh chilli on top—for just the right amount of spicy kick between bites.
Insider Intel:
- Kitchen closes at 2pm, so make sure you get there early to avoid missing out.
Northside Bakery

You know I love a bakery run, but it's made even better with a banh mi bakery run at Northside in Manurewa. Alongside their ever-popular pies and cream-filled doughnuts, their banh mi are also just as popular. Choose from lemongrass chicken, pork belly or tofu—and a steal at only $10 each.
Insider Intel:
- They will ask if you want fresh chilli—definitely say yes, as it adds to the flavour, cutting through the rich meat.
Mug 'n' Bowl Cafe & Eatery
8a Carr Road, Three Kings

Chicken Parmi, but make it banh mi—Mug ‘n’ Bowl are serving up their Vietnamese classic banh mi and more, with weekend specials that sometimes feature other fillings (cue chicken parm a couple of weekends back), special edition banh mi (hot cross banh mi) and super-sized banh mi (for Father's Day). They have roast pork, lemongrass chicken, satay beef, tofu and mushroom fillings to choose from, with all the pickle and coriander (plus spring onion) additions—including their housemade aioli and pork pate (the latter for an additional dollar, but a dollar well spent). They also have housemade fragrant chilli oil, for those who want to drizzle a bit of spice on top, too.
Insider Intel:
- Feeling extra hungry? They also have XL banh mi for those who want double everything. Add a cup of pho broth to sip on between bites and you’re sorted.
Happy Vietnamese Banh Mi and Pho
401A New North Road, Kingsland

For those who have read this far, you’ll know I won’t say no to a banh mi and pho combo. Happy Vietnamese Banh Mi and Pho in Kingsland delivers both from their compact takeaway site, tucked away on the ground floor of an apartment block. Despite being a little hard to find, this spot sells out around midday most days—a testament to its quality—so it pays to go early to avoid missing out.
Insider Intel:
- While their top seller is the crispy pork banh mi (with a savoury lick of fish sauce), check out their other fillings like crispy chicken and fish cake banh mi—unique from the other banh mi fillings around the city if you’re wanting to try something different.

Originally a food truck outside Lynn Mall and part of the night markets back in the day, Banh Mi Delight have since relocated to Avondale (next to Kings Foodmart). With best sellers like their pork and ham banh mi heo, banh mi gà (lemongrass chicken), as well as lemongrass beef and tofu options—they’re a solid go-to for locals. With a couple of seats out front, it’s a great place for a banh mi and Vietnamese coffee in the sunshine.
Insider Intel:
- Ask the lovely owner Kiew for extra pate—it’s that good.
Hue’s Vietnamese Kitchen
Botany Night Markets, Botany Town Centre (Under Hoyts), East Tāmaki
Speaking of night markets, you can find Hue’s Vietnamese Kitchen every Wednesday night at Botany Night Markets (underneath Hoyts). There’s always a queue at Hue’s—so you know it’s going to be good. The banh mi fillings are generous, and at only $10 each, it's more than worth the wait. Choose from traditional pork, grilled or bbq pork, lemongrass chicken or fish cake fillings. We also recommend their che banh lot (cendol) for a sweet pandan dessert drink to complete your meal.
Insider Intel:
- They’re only at Botany Night Markets, so it pays to go early to beat the queues.
Roll’d Vietnamese
Various Locations
Image credit: Roll’d Vietnamese New Zealand | Supplied
I went to the opening of Roll’d in Sylvia Park last year and had a great conversation with the opening team about what Roll’d was about—a nod to family tradition and also giving back to those in need in Vietnam (they're helping build homes for families and children in need, which you can read more about here). With recipes inspired by Mama Hoang, Roll’d came from Vietnam to Australia, and now to Aotearoa—bringing the classic Vietnamese flavours we’ve all come to know and love, elevated a little more. Cue their go-to roast pork banh mi with crackling, buttery Viet-style mayo, chicken liver pate, pickled carrot, fresh cucumber, spring onion and coriander, as well as a touch of soy sauce. They also have other fillings like BBQ chicken, lemongrass wagyu, tofu and they’ve also just launched a new black pepper and red onion wagyu steak banh mi, too.
Insider Intel:
- The locations are handy, being at the mall (all about that pre-shopping banh mi on the go). Dine-in at their Sylvia Park store, or check out their newly opened St Luke’s store. They’ve also got a Botany store opening in July and another site planned at Auckland Airport at the end of the year too.
District 7 cafe
4/624 Rosebank Road, Avondale
Image credit: District7 Cafe | Facebook
Having just opened last month in May, District 7 is the sister cafe to the popular Pho N Co eatery in Rosedale. Serving breakfast from 5am during the week, you bet you can get a breakfast banh mi (yes please) to start your day right. For the serious banh mi eaters, they also have a seven banh mi speed challenge—where if you finish all seven banh mi in under 27 minutes, you get your entry fee back plus a $100 voucher for those future banh mi feasts, and banh mi bragging rights. Eat your way through roast, grilled and braised pork options, butter garlic prawn, lemongrass chicken, avo tofu (a great veg option), and braised beef. Sign us up.
Insider Intel:
- Their banh mi comes with house BBQ sauce, which goes so well with their Viet Combination banh mi—complete with pork xá xíu (char siu), roast pork and Viet ham additions, for those who can’t decide on just one pork filling.
Special mention: Banh Mi King Auckland
239 Queen Street, Auckland CBD
Image credit: Banh Mi King | Instagram
Literally just opened last week (at the time of writing), this one is fresh off the banh mi press (or should we say, oven) and causing a stir in the banh mi food scene. With all their components made in-house—from the crispy bread to buttery egg sauce—choose any banh mi for $15.50 or double proteins for $17.50. Choose from ‘Classic Saigon’ (with pork ham, pork and chicken floss), to their popular crispy pork belly, or other flavours like lemongrass chicken or pork, and even flavoursome black pepper sauce beef.
Insider Intel:
- They also have pho and fresh summer rolls, but given the name of the store, it’d be rude not to order their banh mi. Save a few dollars and get a combo deal while you're at it—we’re eyeing up their banh mi and beef broth combo.
