The World’s First Sleep Pods Are Exclusively Coming To Air New Zealand This Year
Let’s be real, a long-haul flight in Economy usually comes with a side of sleep deprivation (unless, of course, you’ve mastered the art of sleeping upright). And up until today, we’ve just accepted that as a small sacrifice for a well-deserved vacay.
Well, not anymore.
If you’re flying between Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland and New York City from late 2026, Air New Zealand has just announced their epic add-on of bookable lie-flat sleep pods which lets Economy passengers properly stretch out, switch off and get some genuine rest in the air. And honestly? We're a little obsessed.
Why? Because in New York, every hour counts. This is a city where a quick coffee run turns into a gallery crawl, a wander through SoHo somehow ends in a shopping spree, and "just one drink" can easily become a 2am adventure. Whether you're chasing legendary pizza joints, Broadway shows or that unmistakable New York energy, arriving refreshed means spending less time recovering and more time diving straight into the action.
That’s right, in the past our only defence against sleep loss has been a bulky travel pillow, a cheeky melatonin and a whole lot of manifestation that we might actually get some quality shut-eye this time. But from late December 2026, with just a click of a button, it’s practically guaranteed.
Complete with fresh linen, a blanket, pillow and complimentary Nestcessities amenity kit (which includes earplugs and an eye mask) that’ll see you arrive rested in the city that never sleeps, it’s the add-on you won’t want to skip.
So What Exactly Is A Skynest?
Economy Skynest™ is a world-first aviation innovation. It’s a lie-flat sleep pod, decked out with everything you need to get some solid hours of rest, that you can add to your booking when you purchase flights. Each flight will have six individual nests, with two bookable four-hour sessions that have been thoughtfully arranged around meal times, so you won’t be forced to choose between beauty sleep and a feed.

What Flights Will Skynest Be Available On?
From late December 2026, Economy Skynest will be available on flights between Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland and New York City (JFK). And with a flight time of 16 hours there and 17hrs 50m back, a 4-hour break to lie horizontal is the reprieve you need to feel human when those wheels touch down.
