11 Wicked Things To Do This Weekend In Auckland

Yes, we’re already at the end of July, but before we can say sayonara, let’s send off the coldest month of the year in style.There’s plenty of things to do in Auckland this weekend—so whether you’re a foodie (who isn’t?), love a bit of music or want to have a laugh, then you’ll be well looked after with these awesome events. 

All Weekend 

The Food Show | ASB Showgrounds 

Foodies, it’s time to get excited because The Food Show is back! Head along to the ASB Showgrounds for an epic few days that feature a cooking theatre, healthy hub, street food alley and a load of stalls to get amongst. There will be plenty to try and buy, so arrive with your tummy empty and your wallets full. Some of Auckland’s top chefs—Josh Emett, Ray McVinnie, Simon Gault, Sachie Nomura and Chelsea Winter—will also be there to teach you handy tips and tricks to cooking some of their favourite meals.  This is a calendar highlight, so make sure you don’t miss it!

New Zealand International Film Festival 2016 | Various locations

If you haven’t already to the New Zealand International Festival, you’ve got one last weekend to catch a flick or two. If you’re a fan of more alternative cinema, the festival is a great way to see those films that might not be showing at your local big screen. Our picks this weekend are The Daughter (starring our own Sam Neill) and the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra Live Cinema’s Safety Last! Thursday 28th July

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis | Vector Arena

Grammy Award-winning duo Macklemore and Ryan Lewis land on our shores this weekend with their show-stopping tour, This Unruly Mess I’ve Made. Performing some of their smash hits including ‘Thrift Shop’, ‘Same Love’ and ‘Downtown’ this will be one performance you’ll be dancing the night away with. 

The Kills | The Powerstation

Seven years after The Kills last played in New Zealand, they’re back with a brand new album, Ash & Ice. Coming off performances at Coachella and Splendour in the Grass, The Kills are killing it (pun intended). Expect to hear brand new single ‘Heart Of A Dog’, as well as some older tracks like ‘No Wow’, ‘U R A Fever’ and ‘Future Starts Slow’.

Create The Home You Love | Collected by LeeAnn Yare

In a two-and-half hour workshop professional organisers Natalie Jane and Nathalie Brantsma will give you the run down about how to create the home you love. The workshop covers a range of topics, including practical and inspirational ideas to get you started, designing a personal organising action plan and simple strategies that will help you stay organised for life. Light refreshments are also part of the package and every participant will take home a goodie bag filled with gifts and special offers. UoA Vs AUT Comedy Fight Night | The Classic: Comedy Club 

Join eight comedians representing The University of Auckland and Auckland University of Technology as they mix up their jokes, with digs at themselves and each other to see which university has the best joker. All proceeds go towards the Auckland City Mission. Check out the deets here

An Afternoon with Sir Graham Henry | The Trusts Arena

Head along to The Trusts Arena for an afternoon with one of New Zealand’s greatest leaders: the one and only Sir Graham Henry. Tickets can be bought either individually or for a table of ten. The latter  includes a buffet lunch, nibbles, and complementary bevvy until 3pm (followed by a cash bar). If you’ve got any burning questions for Graham, you’re in luck, because there will be a Q&A session. After that there will be a fundraising auction. All proceeds from the arvo will go towards the Waitakere City Rugby Club and its services to the local community. Seats for the event are strictly limited so book your tickets ASAP.

Saturday 30th July

Double V | Green Bay Street Food 

Are you a vegetarian? Perhaps a vegan? If your answer was yes, then this is one street food market to bookmark. Starting this Saturday, Double V will be serving up some vegan and vegetarian street food options, because there’s no reason you should miss out on this foodie trend.  Some of the stalls include Wise Boy Burgers, The Vegan Deli, Mama Tahina, Double Dutch Fries, Loaded Spud and a whole heap more. 

Troye Sivan | Auckland Town Hall 

YouTube sensation turned global pop superstar, Troye Sivan, is bringing his Blue Neighbourhood tour to New Zealand. Performing in our fair country for the first time, expect to hear smash singles ‘Youth’, ‘Wild’, ‘Fools’, ‘Talk Me Down’ and ‘Happy Little Pill’.  

Sunday 31st July

Auckland Fair | Shed 10 

The Auckland Fair is back and is (naturally) bigger and better than ever. With a selection of the best hand made goods from around the country, there is sure to be some bits and bobs to take your fancy. And, if all that shopping makes you hungry, then you’re in luck—Little Yellow Café and Mojo Coffee will be on hand to satisfy your taste buds. 

Bloody Sunday’s | Madame George

In collaboration with The Cult Project, chefs William Cook and Carlo Buenaventura will be hosting a Sunday afternoon dinner at Madame George, aptly names Bloody Sunday. Eat, drink, mix and mingle with friends and strangers and enjoy an innovative take on a Sunday feast.
