17 Outstanding Things To Do In Auckland This Weekend

The winter days we’ve been dreading so very much have finally come and baby, it’s cold outside! But that’s not stopping us Aucklanders from doing what we do best—making the most of the weekend! You can be sure you’ll be doing just that with so much on this weekend.

On the entertainment front, you’re looking at a weekend full of catchy musicals, a Broadway hit and a jaw-dropping circus. If you’re looking to warm your cockles over the colder days, forget becoming a human burrito under all your blankets—there’s TWO whole wine fests and the start of Auckland beer week all going down this weekend! Here’s all the good stuff you’ve got to look forward to this weekend in Auckland.

Jingles: The Musical

Jingles: The Musical follows the hilarious story of a small-town girl perched on the edge of stardom, get ready for jingles stuck in your head for days and weeks after! Ready to thrill Auckland audiences with reinterpretations of classic New Zealand ad melodies after a sell-out season in Wellington, you’ll hate ‘em and love ‘em for all the catchy songs you’ll be humming to yourself with no end in sight!

Weber Bros Circus

These circus legends are back with their brand new show Adrenaline! They’re back after an eight (!) year tour around the world to impress us Aucklanders with all their tricks and treats. Aside from the delish and oh-so-nostalgic circus popcorn and candy floss you have to look forward to—Adrenaline brings their impressive set of cirque artistry and acrobatics, as well as their Globe of Death and one of the only surviving Human Cannonball acts (right over the heads of the audience!) to have you white-knuckled and holding your breath for these crazy performers’ lives!

Million Dollar Quartet

The Broadway and West End smash hit musical is hitting Auckland’s shores! Celebrating a historic moment in rock ’n’ roll history that was 4th December 1956—an unplanned get-together of the four most popular rock icons of all time, Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins at Sun Studios in Memphis, Tennessee. It turned out to be one of the greatest jam sessions—of all time. Grab your friends and get six tickets for the price of four to jam your night away at this rockin’ musical.

Auckland Beer Week

Society of Beer Advocates (yes, really) is bringing you a week filled to the brim with the greatest thing barley, water, hops and yeast was turned into—beer! Bars all over Auckland will be popping up with some crazy cool beer events for Auckland Beer Week. It’s kicking off with a bar bus visiting four breweries up North plus a feed at Sawmill! Lovebucket brings you the best barrel aged beer in New Zealand, whilst Uptown Freehouse is hosting a Sunday yoga class to recover from a beer-fuelled week… with more beer (it's the thought that counts, right?).

Kororareka: The Ballad of Maggie Flynn

A unique story special to New Zealand, it unravels the legacy of the strong women in our past and the ones that were too wild to be captured. Set in the era of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, Kororareka (Russell) was a lawless outpost in a equally wild country. You’ll soon start to feel a deep attachment to the journey of Maggie Flynn, an Irish convict and a whaling captain that arrives in Kororaeka. Captured by a Maori chief, she loses all she holds dear as culture and history collide. A passionate production by Red Leap Theatre, don’t miss the premiere of this compelling story.

Ah yes, one of the most contentious breeds to roam the streets of suburbia: the Middle Aged Man in Lyrca. MAMIL returns to the stage in the form of Mark Hadlow after being lauded in rave reviews in its premiere season. When Bryan Cook’s life and business fall apart, there’s only one obvious answer—to join a men’s cycling group. Taking swipes at the age of entitlement, this contemporary exploration of a male mid-life crisis is not to be missed!

Power Ballad

This part performance lecture, part karaoke party deconstructs gendered linguistic histories to newly articulate pleasure, anger and what it is to embrace femaleness. Smash what you already think you know and start again. Break down barriers, laugh, learn, and sing a couple power ballads at this stunning performance. It’s also on its way to travel to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, so support our kiwi creators and help make this happen!

If There’s Not Dancing At The Revolution, I’m Not Coming

Wake up a little! A party, a poem and a call to arms—this performance fuses film scripts, pop songs, comedy, dance, and elaborate costumes (and you can’t go wrong with elaborate costumes!) to make for one stellar night. Bringing these all together they challenge the treatment of women’s bodies in popular culture and empower, liberate and make you laugh all in one night!

Auckland International Film Festival

The best films belong on the big screen, and that’s exactly where they’ll be at this film fest! InMotion Matariki illuminated Parade

A ride like no other! It’s time to get created and pimp out your bikes, wheelchairs, scooters, strollers, e-bikes (or even yourself!) with fairy lights, tinsel, bike lights and torches for a night-time ride under Auckland’s Matariki sky. Enjoy music and performances as you ride along illuminated floats created by Lucid Dream Bike. Your journey will end at Silo Park and to finish, enjoy a spectacular performance from Touch Compass while you stay warm with a hot chocolate or a mulled wine (or two).

The Other Crate Record Fair

Curated by local DJs, collectors and diggers you can hope to unearth some dusty nuggets of good tunes or some unexpected funky delights at this stellar record fair! Local crate diggers will also be spinning some fine tunes throughout the day. Allpress food and coffee will keep you fuelled for the hunts so get your best searching hat on and may the best digger win!

New Zealand Boutique Wine Festival

The best boutique vineyards from all over the country will showcase more than 300 of their best drops, creating one of the most unique cellar door experiences this country has to offer! Explore wines from different regions with fantastic food pairings, live music, masterclasses or add a VIP lunch or dinner for your ticket for that something special! Matawhero Winery and Silver Wing will also be offering vertical tastings, in which you can try the same wine from a vineyard year on year, learning why each variety is so unique and how growing environments affect the same wine!

Sandringham Food and Spice Tour

Discover all of the flavours of Sandringham during this walking tour! Forget having to choose one restaurant for lunch, this is three hours of six (!) different Indian and Sri Lankan restaurants. Fight Night: Lewis vs Hunt
