36 Awesome Outdoor Adventures To Have In Auckland

It there’s one thing Kiwis love, it’s spending time with Mother Nature. Nothing makes us happier than taking in that sweet, sweet fresh air in the great outdoors.

With this in mind, we’ve put together this handy-dandy guide to the best outdoor adventures Auckland has on offer. All you’ve got to do is gather your crew or your loved one and pick one (or a few) to tick off the list. You’re welcome.

  1. Put on your tourist pants and visit the Auckland Zoo to enjoy some close encounters of the animal kind. 
  2. Soak in those Auckland City views from the comfortable position of a kayak with Fergs On The Water
  3. Earn your sea legs with a thrilling jet boat tour on the Auckland Harbour.
  4. Make like a fox and go zip-lining on Waiheke Island. 
  5. Learn to dive without leaving the city. 
  6. Test your gym progress by abseiling through narrow gorges, jumps and caves
  7. I believe I can fly! Er, well at least you can pretend with a scenic flight over the City of Sails. Get on it, guys. 
  8. Get your spook on while soaking in the history at Australasia’s largest cemetery
  9. And, if you’re keen to get even more spooked, take a ghost tour
  10. Embrace your inner cowboy or girl and take a horse beach and forest trek
  11. Have a wheely good time on one of these cycle routes
  12. Climb the Harbour Bridge (c’mon, it’s time to tick that one off your bucket list) or, if you’re feeling brave, try bungy jumping off it instead. 
  13. Make yourself dizzy before jumping off the Sky Tower…or just take a cruisy walk around it. 
  14. Hike to the top of Rangitoto for incredible views of our fair city.
  15. Head back to said city and eat 53 floors high at the Sugar Club while soaking in the views from another angle. 
  16. Grab some fush ‘n chups from the iconic Fish Pot Café and wiggle your toes in the sand at Mission Bay.
  17. While you’re there, have a crack at stand-up paddle boarding.
  18. Have a picnic with your favourite peeps at the Auckland Botanical Gardens
  19. Remember when we won the America’s Cup? Why not take a sail in a totally authentic America’s Cup yacht? You’ll even get to help them steer on course. 
  20. Walk or cycle the pink path.
  21. Try your hand at the new cool-kid sport of lawn bowls
  22. Or, learn to surf
  23. Head to Silo Park at the weekends for markets, street food and, in the warmer months, an outdoor movie. 
  24. Make the most of the wind and try your hand at windsurfing
  25. Head to Red Beach at low tide and walk around the rocks to the cove.
  26. Spend a day wandering around the swanky shops in Parnell Village. Bonus points if you spend up large at the Chocolate Boutique.  
  27. Explore Auckland’s warring past by sitting on a canon before touring the tunnels at North Head
  28. Go all out and hike 16km, from one Auckland coast to the other. 
  29. Become a bubble head and and take up this newest form of soccer
  30. Come face-to-face with some of earth’s largest mammals by going whale watching in the Hauraki Gulf. 
  31. Or, cruise up the harbour to Riverhead and enjoy a beer or two and a bite to eat before heading back. 
  32. Work out your core and go on a Segway tour of Devonport. 
  33. Become a total tourist and buy a ticket for Auckland’s Hop On, Hop Off bus and explore your way around the city. 
  34. Pack that tent and head away for a weekend of camping
  35. Not so keen on living it rough? Try glamping instead. 
  36. Build your own foodie tour of Auckland and tick off all the places you’ve been meaning to hit up.
