6 Picnic Spots That Are Worth The Drive

Kiwis are ready-made explorers and nothing goes together better than exploring and a good old fashioned picnic lunch. We say pack up the chilly bin with all the sandwiches, doughnuts, crisps, fresh fruits, crackers, cheeses and beersies you can fit and escape the city for a day trip away!

Mathesons Bay

The wonderful little town of Leigh hides the secluded Mathesons Bay, a beach perfect for a picnic in the sun. The bay is cornered off from the ocean so it provides the ideal spot for safe swimming, kayaking, paddle boarding and the likes. There’s even rockpools and a hiking track right on the beach to keep you entertained the entire day.

Wenderholm Regional Park

A well kept secret just on the outskirts of Auckland is Wenderholm Regional Park. Just up near Waiwera, the park is huge so you can count on finding your own quiet picnic spot by the water in the lush grounds. (The park also provides BBQ’s to take your picnic from zero to hero.)

Omaha Bay

Head through Matakana straight to the East coast and discover Omaha Bay. The golden sand stretches on for what feels like forever and the crystal blue water is often visited by a friendly pod of dolphins. Pack a chilly bin up and find your own private strip of sand at the bay!

Tawharanui Peninsula

Hauraki Gulf

Just a short drive down the road from Omaha is Tawharanui Peninsula. The regional park is a sanctuary of green grass, refreshing water, and nature galore. With four sandy white beaches to choose from, enjoy a picnic down on the sand and follow it up with a trek around the farmlands creature-spotting!

Parana Park

Pack up the car and hit the Southern motorway until you reach Hamilton to visit Parana Park. Sitting along the river bank, the park is filled with interactive and water features to keep the kids entertained and provides great shade amongst the trees for the adults to sit back and relax. We suggest stopping by the Hamilton markets on a Sunday to pick up a few treats to make you picnic the best!

Awhitu Peninsula

Awhitu Peninsula is tucked away between Manukau Heads and Tasman Sea on the West Coast, south of Auckland. Once you arrive, give the lighthouse a climb, explore the regional park, and stop by one of the many beaches along the bay. There’s heaps to do and it’s so rural you’ll feel miles away from home.
