You've been on a couple of traditional drinks and dinner dates, things are going well and it's time to step things up a little and show your date you've still got some tricks up your sleeve. Luckily there are plenty of things to do in and around Auckland that will make your date think you're oh-so-creative and clever and not at all like their boring ex who just wanted to watch Netflix all the time.
Here are eight date ideas in Auckland that aren't dinner and drinks.
Catch A Ferry To Waiheke
What is more romantic than whisking your special someone away to an island? Catch a ferry to picturesque Waiheke, hire a couple of bikes (or bring your own) and soak in the spectacular views as you cycle your way around. When you’ve had enough, head to Cable Bay and get comfortable on a bean bag as you choose a snack and a delicious vino before jumping on the ferry and heading home.
Visit An Art Gallery
Why not get cultured as your romance blossoms. Another date idea in Auckland is to spend some time visiting one of our many art galleries. There are plenty of galleries with both local and international artists that will give you all the cultured feels and feed your minds. Imagine walking around, hand-in-hand and finding creative interpretations of the art. Whether it's the well-known Auckland Art Gallery, West Auckland's Corban Estate or somewhere a little smaller, it's a great way to spend an afternoon on a date.
Catch Some Live Music
For something a little different, why not make the most of the wonderful venues around Auckland that host live music? Whether you’re looking for an intimate basement bar gig or a crowd of punters to rock out with, there’s something to suit you and your love.
Hit The Slopes At Snowplanet
No, you don’t need to head overseas or wait until winter to try your hand at skiing. Dress up warm and head to Silverdale’s Snowplanet for a fun few hours. If you’re a beginner, there’s a slope for you, but if you’d really like to show off your skills, take to the full-feature terrain park and swish and swosh your way to happiness.
Go For A Hike
One of the best things about living in the City of Sails is the sheer beauty that Mother Nature rolls at our feet. Pack that backpack with some picnic goodies, and go for a walk or hike at one of the many and varied tracks around Auckland. For a double-whammy head to the Karekare Falls—it’s an easy enough trail and the stunning waterfall will make the perfect backdrop for your couple selfie—just remember to follow the rules and protect our precious kauri from dieback disease.
Take A Sunday Drive
Pack a picnic, download a couple of playlists and set off on an adventure. Whether you drive up North or head to the hills of the South, you'll have plenty of time for fun and games in the car—seriously, have some games up your sleeve. A couple of easy ones to play with only two people are 20 questions and alphabetical categories—pick a category (like countries, fruits, bands, etc.) then take turns naming words that start with each letter of the alphabet in that particular category—but there are plenty out there if those don't tickle your fancy. Here are eight of our fave scenic drives in Auckland in case you need some inspo.
Have A LOL
From as little as fifteen bucks you can catch a late comedy show at The Classic Comedy Club and have a few lols with your date. Head to underground sensation Tanuki’s Cave before the show for a bite to eat and a drink or two to really get the giggles flowing.
Watch The Sunset
Mother Nature is a powerful force and nothing screams romantic like watching the sunset over the beautiful City of Sails. Take your dating up a notch by grabbing a blanket, a picnic and some bubbles and head to one of these oh-so-delightful spots to watch the spectacular view unfold.
