Hāmiora Bailey On Pride, Really Good Kai And Club Culture

Everybody say love. Auckland Pride 2025 is in full swing and, as always, the lineup is packed with an ever-increasing array of euphoric, punchy and thought-provoking gigs, gatherings and parties. Oh, and plenty of glitter—obviously. And this year it's led by artist, Hāmiora Bailey (Ngāti Porou Ki Harataunga, Ngāti Huarere).

We caught up with Hāmiora (he/they) in the lead up to Pride to pick their brains on the festival plus all their favourite spots in the city.

What are you most excited about for this year's Pride?

This year we have over 160 events in the festival and I'm so proud of each and every single one of them and the event organisers and creatives that bring them to life. I'm most excited for our members and the communities they belong to, to see all the incredible hard work that has been put into the festival by our brand team (comprising of Katharine Atafu-Mayo, Vic Walsh, Blaise Clothworthy, Bunty Bou, Amanda Wilson and Evelyn Cammock) and for my team to bask in their glory and feel like they are ushering in a more abundant and artistically excellent Auckland City.

What's your take on The Good Life?

Boil up, a good card game and a stern talking to by Aunties or kuia hahaha. I'm a bit of a sooki lala and a Nanny’s boy, and I think if I didn't have one of these three key ingredients I’d quickly forget where I came from, who I am and where I’m going.

Ideally you'd start the day with...

I used to be obsessed with the iced coffee with maple tea and whipped coconut milk at Benedict's but they’ve recently removed her from the menu as she's a high maintenance diva. So now i'm on the desperate hunt for a similarly life-changing way to start my day. I do love Rude Boy for a chill vibe, heaps of options and relaxed atmosphere. Otherwise, I'm a sucker for an Amano long lunch situation with a bellini. Or Ozone (duh).

And for later in the day, where are your go-to eats?

I am actually so obsessed with Hello Beasty, I feel like no matter what you need they have it for you. Light drink situations, snacks and nibbles, or full feast—it's major. My mum loves it and most of my fondest memories introducing people to the city or the work we do across the different precincts and celebrating have been in one of those purple booths with the lamb shoulder.

I also love Open Late. Christy, Nayasha, Rory and the whānau there are good time gals and it is the warmest way to wind down from a big week on Karangahape.

We're meeting you on the dance floor, where are we headed?

Raynham Park and Neck of the Woods have been holding it down as venues since WAY back. Nightlife and club culture is needing to be resuscitated in this city, and honestly these two venues support our communities year round at great prices. If I'm going to Raynham or Neck I know it's gonna be a great night.

What's your absolute favourite thing to do around Tāmaki?

I  love going to a show at the Basement Theatre or Q Theatre. I love being surprised by great local work. I saw Scatter Gun by Ana Scotney like 5 times and kept taking new friends and whānau each night. I love sharing great theatre with new people and getting their responses and comparing the impact. I also love how long and romantic an evening can be cultivated by theatre. A drink beforehand, a dinner or ice cream after. A walk to the car park laughing, or crying. It's my favourite thing.
