Everything You Need To Know About Louis Theroux’s The Cult of Joe Exotic Doco

Tiger King, Joe Exotic, wears a blue shirt and cuddles up to a real tiger.

2020 was full of many weird and wild things. Aside from COVID, we reckon the second craziest thing to enter our lives has to be finding out the story of Joe Exotic AKA the Tiger King.

When the docu-series, Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness, dropped on Netflix back in March, the world was equal parts enthralled and confused by the peroxide mulleted, gun-toting, occasional country singer turned big cat keeper.

And while Netflix has since revealed there will be a second season of Tiger King and Nicholas Cage has signed on for a tiger mini-series, Louis Theroux has now stepped into the ring to tell the insane story of Joe Exotic. And to be honest, we can’t think of anyone better equipped.

The new doco, Louis Theroux: The Cult of Joe Exotic, is not actually the first time Theroux and Exotic have worked together, with Theroux originally interviewing the larger-than-life character for his BBC show America’s Most Dangerous Pets, back in 2011.

As we all know, since then, Exotic has been sentenced to 22 years in prison for ordering a hit on big cat nemesis, Carole Baskin.

Now, in The Cult of Joe Exotic, Theroux will return to Oklahoma, a decade later to see what has become of the former zookeeper.

While there isn’t a trailer yet, the official synopsis for the 90-minute documentary says, “Looking back at his original documentary while reflecting on hours of unseen footage, Louis sets out to understand who the real Joe Exotic is. As he tries to investigate what has happened in the intervening years, he meets old friends from his original documentary, the team trying to get him out of prison and those closest to Joe who have never spoken before.”

It sounds like it’s going to be one seriously wild ride–not that we’d expect anything less from Theroux and Exotic.

There’s no release date as yet, but rumours suggest it could be airing later this year.
